Had a large one a long time ago (RIP). He stayed fat & healthy for years and I don't remember ever seeing him eat. He was such an elusive eater that I didn't think he was eating anything at all for a long time after a got him. I fed mostly frozen shrimp & blood worms alternated with tetramin flakes that I sunk into the water. I'm guessing he was happy to suck anything out of the gravel he could find while I was asleep.
I FEED MINE FROZEN BRINE SHRIMP SELDOM SEE HIM EAT THOUGH KNOW HE IS

they would bacome tame enough to eat from your hand
I have fed brine shrimp, scuds, fairy shrimp, glass shrimp, a variety of worms, and young livebearers. Feed just before lights out.
We feed ours prawn cockle and mussel all chopped or ripped depending on the size of the eel.

feed mine brine shrimp and occasional blood worms. mine also takes chopped shrimp. but bloodworm is my fire's favorite.
Our largest eats whole prawns and will come to the top of the tank to feed out of your hand, this one is about 24" long and our other is about 14" long now, they pig out on prawn ( they eat more than the rays ) but will also eat earthworms, they can be fussy feeders but will never starve themselves.
Right now mine's eating nothing. (Trying to wean to prepared food and eel is stubborn.) :swear:
But, if it had it's way it would be eating live feeder shrimp and earthworms.
BTW-
K.O.D. that is a great fire eel! Hoping mine will look like that someday! Mine is about 14 inches but looks so skinny compared to yours. :(

I had one for about 3 years. when it was small i fed it frozen meaty foods. Mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, krill, and blood worms. I'd mix all those together, let it thaw, then dump it in the tank. Sometimes he would come out of hiding to eat but very rarely. Also ghost shrimp can be a good food but it gets costly. I only recommend useing them every so often to help vary the diet.
Just my 2 cents :) Best of luck with your eel.

Anything Protein
If it's not eating right now...just let it starve for awhile and it'll eventually learn to eat frozen.

KOD,
GREAT eel! Do you have photos of the entire tank?
Eel feeding:
blood worms to start, live is better, frozen will do (frozen brine shrimp will work as well)
ghost shrimp
night-crawlers when they start to get big (mine graduated to crawlers at about 8")
If you take the time to habituate them, it shouldn't be a problem getting them to eat out of your hand. One of mine is pretty shy, the other is pretty bold.
Tight-fitting lid is a must.
Yah, my fire eel started to eat when I fed with live bloodworms. And now it eats almost everything I feed with. Bloodworms, mealworms, shrimp, heart of ox, mysis, artemia, maggots and fish.

I fed mine earthworms. He was 33" when he died (power outage). He would eat 12 or more night crawlers in a meal.
I still have a small tire track (about18inches) he eats cut up thawed fish (white fish, salmon, smelt etc)
Both are tremendous pets to own.
