Setup cost?

Anyone know what's a rough estimate and what is needed to set up an arowana aquarium? From what I read, it varies between 150 gallon to 300 gallon with various possible filtration.

I am looking at keeping a single specimen of either Jardini, Silver or Asian Arowana (I am in Canada).

A 240 or 300...the extra highth of the 300 really dosn't help you out much in a 8x2x2 footprint would be fine for a silver. I know you'll hear you need a wider tank but my 22" silver can turn around in a 4" wide space so IMO length is more importiant than width.

Jars and Asians grow a bit slower but end up larger if you can keep them alive that long.

A best of all possible worlds answer would be an 8 X 4 x 2.

I thought Jardini and Asian Arowanas maxes out at 3' while the Silvers can reach up to 4' in captivity?

Silver are more flexable than jars or asians so they can be housed in thinner tanks. Silvers can get that big in VERY huge tanks eventually but thats rare. In home aquaria I've always found the reverse to be true. After a certian point a silvers growth rate slows down while the Jars increases if that makes any sense...

Ah. I might get the Silver since it is the most accessible to me anyway. I still have to find the local price quote for Jardini and Asian.

What kind of filters do you guys use for arowanas? I read they don't like too much current.

Only when silver aros a small do they have trouble with current. Once they a big strong fish, a strong current has no bearing. Since your talking a large tank you best bet for a filter is a wet/dry sump. I actually plan on using a wet/dry on my 350G once it's setup, and when I get the fish room going I plan to have multiple tanks on that sump.

You could also go with a multiple filter setup. My 180g which has my two silver aros in it has a rena XP3(canister)strictly set up for bio filtration and two AC110( hang on back)which are for mechanical filtration and have the sponges rinsed weekly. There are other members that go with the oppisite a run a fluval FX5(canister)for mechanical and emp400s(hang on back) for biofiltration. Neither set up is wrong or better, really just a matter of personal taste/opinion.

I have a silver with a quite powerful tetratec 1200 with my silver and he seems to like it, i think that you could get away with a silver in a 240.

Im getting a new tank later this month around 1600l or 420g im planing on using 2 FX5 for it. Will be a jardini, 2 pacus and a TSN in the tank.
