Does anyone know about the legalities of catching sunfish and taking them home to put in my 210 gallon tank? Is there a limit on the size or number of fish I can take?

My 210 tank is currently saltwater; I am going to sell the live rock and sand in it. I am going to put down a lot of play sand for the substrate, and maybe have some sort of soil underneath that? The soil would be for the plants I am going to put in it - water lillies, anarcharis, hornwort, American val, maybe even some cat tails to give the tank some height. I really want to make this a lake biotope. If you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

Alright, technically you're not suppose to catch them and put them in tanks, legally at least. You can buy them from a store and put them in. There's also some rule about if it's for a kid, like as a pet or something, but I'm not sure how that one works...

You got 10,000,000 lakes. I wouldn't worry about it. I know some DNR are hardons but, as long as you are not taking over the legal limit of each fish I think you'll be allright. Some lakes also have slot limits. Can't take a fish smaller than "this" or bigger than "this". So you can only take fish in a certain size group.

I'm sure you can go on a site to find out what you can take. Or like ballsmcgee above me said, you could buy fry from some were.

If you take them from a lake, you won't be the first and you won't be the last, that for sure...

This is the information I got from a forum that is not about aquariums but about Minnesota and fishing. Some of these guys are experts about fishing and know the laws. This is where I found out that it is legal to keep gamefish if you have a kid under 16.

Here's the exact quote:

"Find a kid under 16 to help you out here. Per page 18 of the regulations"

"- Anglers 16 or under may transport legally caught largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, rock bass, black crappie, white crappie, bluegill, pumkinseed, green sunfish, orange spotted sunfish, and black, yellow, and brown bullhead. No more than four of each species may be transported at any one time, and any individual fish can be no longer than 10 inches. At no time may water from infested waters be transported. "

Man I need a round of applause for this find because it took me over 1 hr just to find this post. I saw this couple months ago and just want to share this with you so we can stop the debate..........well in MN atleast.....

lol you can't keep fish no longer than 10".............good luck finding a sunny over 10 inches

You should be safe getting those sunnies to your tank, just bring a kid.
