Whereabouts in Cheshire? You have of course got the British Cichlid Assoc., the North West Cichlid Group http://www.nwcg.co.uk/, the Greater Manchester Cichlid Assoc, then you've got Merseyside Aquarists Assoc., Preston and District Aquarists (I know it's not Cheshire but people travel from as far afield as Runcorn and Skipton to the meetings), plus maybe others.
The Catfish Study Group meet in the NW, many of their members also keep Cichlids.

I joined another uk fish forum before this one but got a little bored of guppy's, platty's. I mean don't get me wrong ive got nothing against guppy's some of my fish really love em,for dinner.I just wish i had known about this place when i had 2 clown knifes they got to 18 inches when i had to take them to lfs .They sold them for £50 the pair, i got fish food about £10 worth. It was the moving them that done me,would have been happier to have found someone myself and they go straight to their tank ,instead of to lfs then to new tank. And i wouldn't have asked foe £50 but asked to see them in there new home.

I invite all members to a UK based forum but people from other countrys are welcome to join, its http://www.oddballexpress.co.uk/phpBB2/index.php at OBE they do group orders from Jeff Rapps and Don Conkel for rare cichlids, they also do orders from south and central america which you can get rare catfish, cichlids and the list goes on,whats found in those waters you can get imported and a great price. its free to join and has a quite active forum, there is also alot of experianced fish keepers on the board who can help all common and uncommon problems you can face with keeping rarer fish.
also featured on the site there is a added forum for the british cichlid association and north west cichlid group, where you can find when the meets and auctions are taking place.
Really worth signing up, i hope to see more members in the near future.....

If your looking for an odd ball or something different then yes it can get quite expensive, your average tropicals are well priced plus they've got a ton in stock, of everything
synodontisjack
10-18-2008, 4:57 PM
i went to BAS today and it was great better than pier and it wasnt expensive at all not even the oddballs i got a 14" p. lapradei for £25, its far cheaper than most places for example channa ornatipinnis was £28 and spotted gars were £10

Can I introduce a bit of the real world to this thread. Going to ASDA causes me pain because I have to spend fuel, if we are going to meet anywhere then we need 2 things:
A. A reason why(not just to mug boggy for his stickers);)
B. Why not it could be interesting
PM me if Interested, peeps keep going on about a meet yet no one seems to do anything
I'll organise it

Yanbbrox

It would depend on how many people were interested, if 10 people around here were up for it then somewhere around here, if 10 people all over the country were interested then somewhere in the middle.
Transport would need to be looked at, take boggy for example, not old enough to drive
Also what would happen at this meet? The big socal one that they do every year is held at Johnptc's because of the massive tank, something to look at discuss etc. It wouldn't be much fin to meet up on the services on the M6 and everyone brings a goldfish bowl;)
Anyone in the uk with a Johnptc size tank? Failing that anyone with a huge number of tanks? Massive filtration systems? Anyone with any of the above that would want to host it?
Ideas anyone?

I was thinking along the lines of going to one of the big lfs or a public aquariums with somewhere we can eat and get to know one and other etc.
The big question, is would anyone be interested or even go? Sounds great as a post in a thread but to get someone away from the keyboard and get them there is a different thing.
Going back to the big socal meet, John hosted, various peep gave away free fish, Li sorted the 'I was there' t-shirts etc. someone else did the food. To recreate something like that over her is unrealistic without some sort of support.
We'd need a LFS with great generousity to go that far and there aren't many that size that are big enough to even consider it, public aquariums I can't see doing it either, the only one that comes to mind is Blue planet not far from you, to me been there seen it, others may think blue planet:confused:
I think we'd need the support of the Uk mods to make it an mfk meet. I think the best course of action is to make more friends via the site, get to know each other more and come up with some ideas

Hi I am from the UK and would be up for a meet. I live in warrington fyi. It would be very cool if we could get tshirts etc and i would be happy to help if needed.
The blue planet wasn't so impressive imo - however i did love the archer/brackish tank and the otters out the back. I have been to the sealife-center in Blackpool and that was even less impressive. I would go so far as to say it was sh1te with the occasional highlight (the exit).

I would happily go back to either

Yeh Chester's bat cave is really good, but a meet there wouldn't be good, too dark and there is not really anywhere to stand around as its just a path through the exibit. Was at Blue planet recently, its just gone downhill to what it was, the large tropical tank was my fave exibit and fish, but they have lost there 3m Arapiama (:() and its a complete rip off.

Been to the blue planet twice, once years ago and was quite impressed, once a few months ago and nothing much has changed apart from the giga isn't there any more, so fairly unimpressed that nothings changed.
The one at Blackpool wasn't up to much when I went there either IMO

I could probably squeeze a few in the garden but it's not really the time of the year, plus it's still a bit of a building site. There again if anyone wants to see my tanks there are pictures on here and the building site is also documented.
Question: What does everyone want to get out of a potential meet?
Yanbbrox
10-21-2008, 2:58 PM
Ops forgot my answer. Ju,st to meet up with people who are into the hobby, more networking would also help everyone knows someone who can get something fish related a bit cheaper, 2 of my heaters have just packed up on a Sunday night who can lend me one etc. or visa versa.
That sort of thing

BAS wouldnt be a bad place as some unusual fish sometimes, fair prices and if I recall they got a cafe area? Plus its nice and big.

Dan BAS would be good, cafe's not huge but they get some nice fish in for good prices and they got the angling bit in there as well. Also pier is just like 10 mins down the road so anyone making a long distance journey could check out a few of the better lfs.

Yeah, I was there the other week and noticed the new setup. Personally I think we need a bar then we can get someone really drunk and convince them that £750 for an Asian Aro is a good deal;)
When did George and Mildrid arrive?
So if no one else has any complaints then BAS for the meet? Jack can pick me up on the way:naughty:
If so all we need now is Boggy to convince Neo to donate the logo for the 'I was there' t-shirt;)
