NEW FISH : Albino delhezi birchir [Archive]

not sure how you'd tell if it's a del or senegal if it's an albino? not til it's at least 6" or so
Delhezi have a flatter head with more equal length jaws, while senegalus have a rounder head where the upper jaw is more protuberant. Also, delhezi have larger, and typically more, dorsal finlets. Delhezi typically have 10-13 dorsal finlets versus 8-11 for senegalus. The dorsal spines start closer to the head on delhezi than on senegalus or any other species for that matter.

their dorsal finlets count would be different (and along the same line, where the 1st finlet starts). the head shape is different as well.

edit: haha jesse beat me to it...and with more details :D yeah delhezi has a more pointed head, not quite sure if its flatter or not though compared to senegal

From the picture, I can't tell if it's a senegalus, delhezi, or a frozen French fry though. ;)

i haven't even seen these on the japanese shore yet, this is the first in the hobby, on the internet, world wide, unless someone else can show me otherwise!!!

You should easily be able to tell by its finlets because on Delhezi's there finlets start a lot closer to it's head than a senegal and theres more of them, also the shape of delhezi's is different...

there is another difficult way to identify senegal and delhezi bichirs, does not matter if they are albino or natural colouration.
But it's really hard for me to describe that in English:grinno:, hope you can understand;

You must compare backfins and breastfins (don't know if it's the right name for that in English).
The End of the breastfins is nearer at the first backfin by a delhezi bichir. So there is no distance, first backfin is nearlly on the top of the breastfins, example:

Distance between breastfins and first backfins by a senegal bichir is a little bit more, for example:

So the differences aren't very big, but they exist:D

And as you allready said, you can count the backfins. If he has 8 or 9 backfins, it's a senegal.
