Does anyone have any, and what is your opinion on them. Would they be good to have in a 75 gallon community tank?

Keep in mind that these freshwater clams when reproducing produce copious amoust of small offspring that will attach themself to the gills of your fish and continue to feed of them untill they reach a size where they can begin to feed as adults. Your better off just steaming those things and having a few friends over.

*that is IF they can manage to filter enough food to sustain themselves.

Hiya oddphelo, welcome to MFK, I know that clams can be fed using a baster and liquified flake food but as Marc said, many FW clams go through a hitchhiker stage that is very irritating to the fish, some of the ones sold in lfs don't have that stage.

Asian/golden clams (Corbicula spp.), the most commonly available variety, do not produce glochidia.

That is the one, I have never kept them and only heard about them recently, it was on this site that I heard of them, I have since read that they will also filter feed on brine shrimp naupuli.

Is a freshwater clam the same thing as a freshwater muscle - or are they only in Australia

We have small FW clams and larger FW mussels in this area, the mussels at least should not be kept in tanks with fish, the ones here don't do well in warm water and do produce parasitical larvae. They are enlongate as opposed to clam shape. Here is a pic of a golden clam and a FW mussel. The asian or golden clams are forbidden in many states as nuisance species.
