You CAN but theres no real advantage to it...I use crushed coral in all of our tanks to buffer the RO/DI water and keep them at a constant 7.8 PH.
If you have hard water in your area this might well be a problem.

Will keep your pH high. Depends on what fish you want to use it with.

I use it in my 210 with hard water, no problems here in fact, my rainbows breed regulary in it.
