just picked up a new spotted today, at 6.5" he's the smallest thing in the tank.

unfortunately, something horrible just happened. one of my senegals rushed past him and he panicked, darting snout first into the substrate. he was stunned there for a while and then i started to get worried. upon getting him out(his snout was half in fine sand) he started to sink head first, as though dead, and then i obviously panicked, and took him to the surface of the water. he started to show some signs of life but suddenly went beserk and started swimming in mad circles. and then he just started to sink head first again. not showing anysigns of life except a few feeble spasms...i took him to my 15 gal and stroked his belly for about 15 mins, thinking that he overate, but when he showed no signs of life i let him go and tried to see if he could recover on his own. he started sinking headfirst again, and is now in a verticle position. only after typing all this i came across the possibility that he may have inhaled sand, and died from this?! or WHAT ELSE ON EARTH COULD HAVE HAPPENED TO MY POOR GAR?!?!!?!!?

sorry for your loss since that was a nice looking gar.. I'm not sure if he inhaled sand or not maybe Jordan can answer that question.

he probably broke his spine on impact when he hit the bottom...

This prob wont make you feel better, but I got my spotted at 8". I'm guessing the bigger the better being that he knows not to swim fast. I keep mine with 2 VATF'S and the always dart by him or as they play tag the might side swipe him, but he doesn't flinch. I say next time (I know your ganna get another :)) try for one a little bigger or keep him solo till hes a good size

you have no idea!!:naughty: just picked up a 15"er ytd and have another 3 reserved for me for when i get back, but will prob only get two more, as tank's getting a lil full. these two will be purely for experimental sakes, as they're stunted gars and i wanna see if they recover. needless to say they won't be in the community tank though....

all spotteds, i really want to buy this cuban gar for daylight robbery price but lack tank space. so it's a no go. might get tropical gars when h2o aquatics get some in and i have enough ppl on my side to place a large enough order.
