Not if you have any kids or cats.
Hiya red wulf, welcome to MFK, you will need to define pond, any body of water that outflows directly into a water shed will most likely be illegal to stock with Piranha.
You pond will need tropical temps so unless you are heated and probably indoors it is probably not practicle. Indoor and greenhouse ponds would work, a raised indoor pond 8'x 12'x 2' holds about 1400g, so 20-24 full grown rpbs even using pond level filtration, you might want that room pet and child proofed.

omg are u kidding me OF COURSE ITS A GOOD IDEA!
Wow, That would be crazy. I would make a 4,000g pond huge with a glass panel and then put around 70 huge Caribes and natteri's. I would make it look like a pond in the Amazon with huge driftwood and somewhat murky water and plants.

Are you in Diamond Bar. CA? Ps are prohibited in CA. If you keep Ps, they'd have to be indoors. If you were caught with Ps in an outdoor setup, you'd probably be hauled away, locked up, the key to your cell melted, and your bars welded shut. Any missing cat or kid with a scratch on his finger could point the blame at your fish and you'd have no defense.
I had an illegal jump over my fence to evade the border patrol. He landed in my leopard shark pond and scratched himself on either the rocks or coral. That moron sued me and claimed he was attacked by my sharks and that having them so close to my fence was 'setting a trap' (also illegal in CA). I won the case but, it cost me $8K in legal costs. And, that's with fish that weren't on the prohibited list.

That was one of the stipulations of the court findings. I had to post a bilingual warning sign on the outside of my fence-wall.

LETS GET SOMETHING STRAIGHT, IF YOU DID FALL IN YOUR P POND, ALL YOU WOULD DO IS SCARE THE CRAP OUT OF YOUR P'S, YOU ARE A MAMMAL, THEY ARE FISH EATERS, THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A DOCUMENTED CASE OF P ATTACK HUMAN, CEPT THAT STUPID 70'S MOVIE :swear: MISCONSEPTION IS WHY THEY ILLEAGAL
a p pond is a great idea, doesnt have to me anything fancy, heck a 50 dollar wallmart swimming pool hold 1200 gallons of water, you could put 60 p's in there
check this out, if you have bearshare, im putting a piranah documentary up, all p newbies should check it out, he swims with p's, no bites!
movie called Piranhas_with_Nigel_Marven
bearshare is a peer to peer networking program, you can download it for free, some consider it a spyware program so download at your own risk.....but the movie is the best ive seen on P

Not quite true, there are many documented cases of piranha attacks, they are minor and usually result in shallow circular scars, National geographic had several pics over the years. You might startle the fish enough to bite and you might lose a mouthful or two of you but all you would have to do is hop back out of the pond. Also I saw several B+W movies showing piranha attacks including a Tarzan one in Africa (I think the fish commute) so you can't blame that one stupid movie, at least they don't fly, lol.

As is visible in this picture, the snapping piranha made a semi-circular bite on the girls palm, but fortunately didn't remove a chunk of flesh. Perhaps 10 years old at the most, the girl did not cry or fuss, but paddled her canoe across the river to have her mother wrap a strip of cloth around the wound. A short time later, we returned with, and applied antibiotic cream and proper bandaging material.

Hey Guppy, I was wrong, those definatly look like p bites on the guys leg, much larger than what my p have done, but they leeve that same bite pattern on their food. I suppose if they are hungry enough they are not too fussy. like most wild animals
i think the half moon is from the bottom jaw
still hate that movie, but do respect the rest of your post, those are definatly p bite marks, frickin huge ones too

It was a very dumb movie, the sequel (with the flying piranha) was at least funny.

Here is what would be cool for those of you with appropriate climate:
Make a pond outside your house, but right next to the house's foundations. Saw a hole in the foundation, say 6-7' x 2' (much like for a window) and put a glass on the hole. This becomes the viewing window from your basement, at eye level with the fish. Then all you need is a nice biotope setup and a bunch of p's and you're all set...
I would pay to see this lol

I think its a good idea, but everyone is right god forbid a child got hurt in the pond. And to Oddball, I am glad you won the case. Thats messed up what the illegal guy did and running from the cops. God forbid someone went on "your" property and over "your" fence and got hurt on "your" pond, makes it your fault lol. Damn I am kinda rethinking the pond building in my backyard lol. Nah hehe. I think i am gonna put and electric fence and a sign that says climb at your own risk in all languages lol. J/K sounds like a good idea though. But I will probably have to check on the laws here to see the depth i am allowed to have on "my" own property, cause i want a pretty big and deep pond =).

wohoooo. id love to see this one built.
if you saw the documentary of nigel marvin, there was a part where the P's were not attacking the kids while nigel marvin and the kids were swimming.
in my opinion, the P's are acustomed to people thats why they do not attack them.
so my theory is if the P's in the pond are not used to people dipping in it or animals like cats, they would try to taste them. but if the P's are used to people swimming in the pond they would not bite.
nigel marvin fed the P's in a tank with a baby goat or something yet he did not get bitten.

I haven't seen the documentary, nor have I kept pirahna, but I went swimming a lot in some amazonian tributaries in Ecuador. What I would do is take a huge breath then tread water so that only my eyes were above the water and then these bulldog bats would swoop through the air and catch small fish that were feeding by the surface. The next day we went fishing and I caught a pirahna, in pretty much the same area I had been swimming in :nilly:
I asked my guide about it, and he said that we only needed to worry when it was the dry season, and the river would dry up in a lot of places into just ponds that would trap a lot of pirahna in a small space without much food; that's when you get stories about them going absolutely psycho on things.

thats gonna be tits! i want one:headbang2
I have often thought abut a piranha pond, it would make an awesome time at the family barbecue. Suburbanite yuppies standing around, talking shop and stocks, me in an apron, grilling a few feet from my fenced off pond. I tell them to stay away from the water, "you'll get eaten!", they mistake my light hearted chuckle for a lighter humor, and laugh themselves. "one for us"i say as i put a patty on the grill "and one for them" as i toss one into the pond. The yuppies stop mid gulp, and the everyone goes so quiet you could nearly hear the teeth gnashing together. Quickly the soccermoms look to locate their children, then begin trying to coerce their husbands into leaving. Not caring where they are going, just wanting to be away from this sick twisted freak that keeps a pond of death in his yard.....:nilly:

I can't believe the crap people sue you over. This is ridiculous. That is why I live in Canada. Wasn't he trespassing? Can't you sue him for trespassing? Also is it true in the States that you can shoot trespassers? US law is really fascinating. You can pretty much sue for anything.
