Hopefully, this is in the right spot. I'm trying to find some fish to fill the middle of my tank, which will have those fish and a bottom-dwelling catfish or 2. I was thinking maybe a couple oscars, but I don't want anything that will dig up my plants. Are there any other cichlids that would work?
I was also thinking of finding some schooling fish that will be big enough to probably not be eaten that won't bug the other fish. The catch is I would like some sort of amazon fish and I can't find any that meet the requirements. I know the bichir doesnt fit in an amazon biotope, but it's the only acception I am willing to make.
Thanks,
Paul

How big of a tank are talking? A couple of oscars a cat or 2 and a bunch of schooling fish would need a very large tank.

right now, i have a 125, but i'm planning on getting something in the area of 8x3x3 or 10x4x4 (LWH) pretty soon
and, to clarify: i either want a couple cichlids or a few schooling fish, not both
do silver dollars get large enough?

My Redhook Silver Dollars have grown pretty fast, and their max size is 6 inches. I think the more common variety gets up to 4 or 5 inches.
My redhooks are a great schooling fish. They are also absolute pigs. I have never seen a fish eat like they do.
Here is a pic of them:

if you think it isnt necessary, let me know that too. I dont wanna overcrowd or anything.

I'm thinking a predatory catfish, poly (or 2), BGK and aro will be enough for now. when i move to a larger tank, i may add a couple oscars, but that's probably it. does that sound okay?

It may work but when ever you have a tank full of agressive fish you always run the risk of a turf war. I would just buy one thing at a time and see how they react to each other and plan it out that way. If you have one fish that hates everything thing else it not a good idea to add fove more fish.
