Any good pics of an emperor snakehead to compare? I was told this was a Channa Marulius(cobra snakehead), by my lfs. I will be pretty annoyed if this is not a cobra. :swear:

def a maruloides = emperor
marulius is the cobra and looks like this:
http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=9528&stc=1
with the distinct spot on the tail, and bumps on the head.
a striata is just a common snakehead.
but hey, that is a beeyootiful maruliodes. if i saw one like that , i would pick it up too.
nice pick up!
what country do you live Ashdavid?

It has the orange spot just like the cobra, that is why I was thinking it was a cobra,Does the maruliodes have that spot? I have been asking around today and a very knowledgable person had led me to believe that my fish is in fact a Channa marulius.var "Izabella". When it was a juvenile it looked just like the fish below, and this fish is a Channa marulius.var "Izabella".
I live in Japan BTW.

definitely not a cobra, cobra is aurantimaculata. That's an emperor.
And Joel - a striata is not a cobra - it's a "striped snakehead" or common snakehead.

actually ashdavid is correct.
marulius is called the cobra snakehead. Auranti isnt the original cobra. This is the one.

really?
This is a cobra and the auranti is the golden cobra?
I thought the marulius and maruloides were basically the same thing.
How big does this marulius get in captivity?

Yep, that's a marulioides alright! Congrats, very nice!
Marulioides actually can be kept in community tanks... (i have anyways). Marulia,,, ehh, not for long. Marulioides also don't grow as large as marulia either. Beautiful gold dust spotting on their bodies. Change colors almost like chamelions... definitely in my top 5 favorite sp. :)
(bucket below is 20in. across)

PhullTank57

marulioides are fairly fast growers... close to marulia, maybe a bit slower. :)
i'm bad at guestimates??!! :D

Can you think of a channa that gets to around say - 12- 18 inches that is not that fast growing? :)
NICE!
Good images too,
Yes auranti is the Golden Cobra not the Cobra. :)

channa maruliodes :
"caudal fin has a black, white-ringed ocellus at the upper part of its base."
from, the net.
thats cool. what other channa have ocellas?
the channa striata has a false ocella at the end of it's, 'top' fin. it fades away with time..

That looks viciously sweet :headbang2
One definite way to tell marulias and marulioides apart if you arent into ray and scale counts is to ask which country it was imported from.If its India its marulias and if its Indonesia or round abouts its marulioides. You have a marulioides and personally I think you have the much better of the two.It should max out at 20-24",will have a better temperament although mine is only in with much larger fish just in case and his adult colours will be striking. The spots on the side lead to his eastern nickname of flower snakehead, quite deceiving dont you think.
DAmn thats a nice fish. I can't wait to go back to see mine, I haven't seen it in 3 months. Apprently its double the size now woOOOoooooooO

i had a marulius very nice fish loved him to bits used to hand feed never vicous to me tho. was to the food tho
Channa marulioides
nice pic
next time please ask me first cos its my picture
the fish starting this topic is a channa marulia
a marulioides is stockier and has a slightly different shape to the head
aurantimaculata is not a cobra
thats something tom halvorsen started on his list
common names for channa do nothing but to cause confusion
it would really be easier if everybody would use the propper scientific name
the info is there on the net all you have to do is look for it and use it
at least then we all know what fish we are talking about

Baloo, so what exactly do you mean by 'slightly different' head shape??... the pic below, what species would you say they are?.. marulia? marulioides?? :uhoh:
http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=10300&stc=1
aurantimaculata is not a cobra
Aurantimaculata pair here! ;)

Aurantimaculata pair here! ;)
what i mean is that the head profile of a marulioides is stockier and shorter then marulia
someone once mentioned to count the scales behind the eye towards the end of the gillplate. not sure what he means to count for but the gillcover on a marulioides is is shorter then on a marulia.
i have only recently discovered this myself.
i suppose i couldn't see the wood for the trees.
i see you still keep ur aurantis with ur other fish
not telling you what to do but aurantis are a temperate species and can be real mean mothers. i hope it doesn't happen to you but i had then tear eachother appart. i personally wouldn't keep them with anything especially fish as nice as urs
i like that ray a lot

Baloo, appreciate your concern, but I need not worry... (fish are not mine). I am quite aware of what these fish are capable of doing... and understand that some can be 'mean mothers' at times. But I do beleive that some can still be kept with others as well, depending on conditions, of course. I think we have already had some small talk/discussion on the mixing topic in another forum, and I know that you still don't agree with me, it's okay.
