arapaimas are illegal to buy or sell...
theyre overpriced...
claim to grow no more than 5 ft...
and 1000 gall is a good size tank...

They shouldn't be selling arapaimas on that site. Too many people with a 100 gallon tank will start buying them, thinking that they have enough space.

since when were they illegal? and they say 15' in the wild, 5' in aquaria(but i do agree that is a bit on the small side for aquaria). i wouldnt complain about them being overpriced if you dont want any yahoo to buy them.

Not illegal, they just need CITES (class II I believe) permits.

How would they think they have enough space in a 100 gal tank?..IT clearly says 1K.
Seems likes there's some misleading info. I think they grow larger then 5' and need more then a 1K tank( going by JohnPTC's tank). On the bright side it looks their intended market is public aquariums, no individuals.

I know it says 1000 gallon tank, but people will ignore that and buy them because they look cool. 1000 gallons would be way to small anyway. But yeah, I think your right, the site is probably targeting public aquariums.

pirarucu easily to keep except super larger appetite and large space needed during their growth.Pirarucu also are fragile let say less than 11" or less that 1' ..If somebody insist want to kept pirarucu as prime attraction in your monster collection,you'd better start with 12"(IMO)..aggeresion : smaller and fit to his/her mouth, then that fish finished..bigger than him, they don't bother..they only belong to public aquarium and pond only..pirarucu are not illegal,like SimonL sat earlier,since they listed in CITES, permit are required to kept them..the monster survived around 100 million years,we can't lost another ancient species anymore..:chillpill:

SimonL is right..not illegal..just need a permit. Down here in River Dale Maryland, they are selling 5-6" ~$100...Awesome specimens but really need big aquariums or space to accomodate these Giants!!!

Yea you need paperwork to buy them off liveaquaria, they are not to bright when it comes to FW. But there SW Divers Den is AMAZING.

I've heard that arapimas are illegal to keep or sell in LFS in the state of california. is there any truth to this?

I know these are mostly old post, but incase you haven't checked in awhile, Liveaquaria doesn't sell Arapaims any more.
