If you added a "both" selection, it would run away with the votes, even with a late start. I am totally against ties, but this is a tie....

like something out of a comic book :)
I was going to vote number 1 when i saw it, then i started thinking and i agree with people here, i think we all have seen Red aros be thrown at us all the time, and since we are in america that makes it worse :((. Number 2 makes me think "what im i looking at" the detail is so great. btw what im i looking at?

Deep water isopod (Natatolana borealis). They are scavengers that live in the dark, cold depths of the ocean.

I voted for # 1 but # 2 is a great pic too.
I vote number one because it's more likely that a MFK member would own an asian arrow than an isopod. Even if tank temperatures were right, it would be difficult to mimic the pressure in the wild.

It's true that it'd be difficult to mimic the pressure-but since isopods are crustaceans, their hard exoskeleton makes changes in water pressure less worrying than with deepwater fish, and so they can survive in shallow, cold tanks.
Isopods are so ugly that they're cute! I love their alien-ness. Plus, I like the focus of #2-and that you can see another isopod just to the right of the obvious one.

NO MORE AROS! I love the second picture, its something great and new with great photography!
IMO, Aros ruin the fun of the POTMs, they usually win
Father Azmodius
12-17-2007, 8:25 PM
I voted for #2. It would be very difficult to get more of the body in the shot and have it be in the same depth of field. The nature of Macro photography. Subject matter aside, #2 is the better picture, from a technical point of view.
Crazy Taco
12-17-2007, 9:24 PM
I think they should do this with all POTM everyone vote on all the pics and then break it down to the top 3-5 that would be great!

I voted for number 2. I have seen aro pics everywhere on this website, while it kind of is the websites motto, definition of a monster fish, I just think that #2 went out on limb and was probably a harder picture to take.
Kinda like Game of the Year for xbox 360, sure Halo 3 is the obvious choice, but bioshock won becasue it was original.
Except in this case I think Bioshock is going to lose.

Can't argue that:)
This is more about which is the best pic. Has to do with picture quality, subject, overall appeal but mainly what people like the most. Seems like too many people get hung up on this "Aros always win" crap. Give me a break this is MonsterFishKeepers so why wouldn't a monsterfish win?
Maybe next month we should start banning all species of fish that have previously won, so this will be in fairness to all species of fish, to have a chance to win POTM:screwy:

lets have some more info on these isopods they look so cool
Here is the short version of some info on giant isopods that my work gave to me.
Giant Isopod Bathynomus giganteus
"Giant Isopods are a parasitic crustaceans that attatch themselves at the base of the tongue of the rose spotted snapper. With the claws on its front three pairs of legs, it extracts blood. As the parasite grows, less and less blood is able to reach the tongue, and eventually the organ 'atrophies' from the lack of blood. The parasite then replaces the fish's tongue with its own body, by attatching to the muscle of the tongue stub. The fish is able to use the parasite just like a normal tongue, except that it has to share its food with the isopod. this is the only know case of a parasite functionally replacing a host organ."
"A giant isopod may be one of approximately nine species of large isopods (crustaceans related to shrimp and crabs) in the genus Bathynomus. They are thought to be abundant in cold, deep water of the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean."
"Maturing in length between 19 and 37cm, and reaching a weight of approximately 1.7kg (3 lbs). Most other isopods range in size from 1-5cm."
"Giant isopods are important scavengers in the deep-sea benthic environment; they are found at a depth of 550 ft to the pitch darkness of 7,020 ft, where pressures are high and temperatures are very low. They are thought to prefer muddy or clay substrates and lead solitary lives."
"Although scavengers, these giant isopods are mostly carnivorous and feed on dead whales, fish, and squid; they may also be active predators of slow moving prey such as sea cucumbers, sponges, radiolarians, nematodes, and other zoobenthos, and perhapse even live fish. They are adapted to long periods of famine and have been known to survive over eight weeks without food in the aquarium. When a significant source of food is encountered, giant isopods gorge themselves to the point of 'compromising their locamotive ability'. A brooding female is at risk of losing her eggs if she overindulges in the food to the point of bloating."
Also, giant isopods may lay the largest eggs of any marine invertebrate. And when threatned they can roll themselves up into a tight ball where they are protected by their strong armor-plated shells.
