sorry guys this may be a newbie question but I have never done this so I was wondering what to get. I have to replace the bottom on a 6foot 210ga tank, is there any particular brand I should be looking to use? also if its something other than what I can get at home depot please let me know where to get it. thanks.

You want the one for "Windows & Doors" (clear)

GE Silicone I is right.
Not to be confused with Silicone II which is usually right next to it on the shelf, which has chemicals in it to prevent mold and mildew from forming, which I'm guessing would be toxic in a closed system like an aquarium.
I just resealed an aquarium with the stuff and make sure you do it in a well-ventilated area. I'd even place a fan near the tank, I gagged more than a few times, the fumes that come off of it are incredibly caustic....

But just be careful some say not for aquarium use.

thanks guys, great info. to remove the residue of the old sealant should I just use a razor blade or is there anything I could use such as water, chemicles or anything like that?

I used rubbing alcohol to clean up the areas where the new sealant will go after the old stuff is scraped off, with something like a razorblade. Wait for the alcohol to dry off before attempting to reseal.

Vinegar is recomended to clean the glass prior to resealing.

Have you got a Manufacturer related reference for that? I'd love to put that in a sticky, but I need positive proof.

There is a GE Silicone II for Doors & Windows that does not have the BioSeal in it.

GE Silicone I Window & Door (Blue Label) white color. It is the same as GE Silicone 1 clear but uses Titanium dioxide to give it the white color.
Link to GE Silicone MSDS site. I cannot link to the PDF directly so you have to do a search for GE112A 12C
http://www.gesilicones.com/NASApp/gesilecomm/SQuickMsds
Link to FDA certification for Titanium Dioxide.
Look under "Table 1. Color Additives Permitted For Direct Addition To Human Food In The United States"
http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~lrd/colorfac.html
If you can look at a tube of the all-glass (aqueon) aquarium silicon it should have an MSDS and or CAS# on it. Then you can compare hazardous and non-hazardous composition to determine what is extra.

Yep had those, was looking for a direct (link) from bukster to GE saying they were the same.
I've read the same thing on another forum about GE I and the All Glass being the same thing. Unfortunately GE or All Glass wont say anything because GE would lose the deal with All Glass on stuffing their brand name tubes with the GE stuff. When the cats out of the bag who in their right mind would buy an $8 3 oz tube of silicone when they can buy a $4 10.1 oz tube.

We don't recommend any of our products for underwater submersion, but some aquarium manufacturers do choose to use our products on glass to glass aquariums. The products they use most often are RTV108 or IS808. These are industrial grade products. Our consumer grade (this means they would be found at Home Depot or a local hardware store) offset to these industrial grade products is GE012A (Window and Door Silicone I).

I emailed GE about using silicone for aquariums and got this response:
"The only product we recommend for aquariums is RTV108. I have attached a data sheet for your review. We appreciate your interest in GE Silicones.
Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us
or visit our website at www.gesilicones.com (http://www.gesilicones.com)."
"Aquarium manufacturers have used RTV108 in fresh and saltwater aquariums up to 20,000 gallons."
I have used 100% silicone without any mildew retardants in it for years with no problems though.

So I would say it is as safe as it gets without specifically stating so.
If you must have one that says safe for aquariums get the all glass brand or Loctite has one Called Extreme repair that states it is safe for aquariums up to 30 gallons and 18 inches of water height.

Ive used GE RTV108 from 2.5 gallons all the way up to 230 gallon tanks for reseals, rebuilds, and glass replacements.
My last rebuild, was a 55 gallon. Had to replace both the sides on a 55 due to a cleaning goofup. I took the entire thing apart, cleaned off all the old silicone, ordered 2 new side panels and put it all back together. That was over a year ago. That tank still holds water with zero leaks.
Good Luck!

I resealed a 55 with GE I, no problems.
Part of the reason they won't say directly that you can use it for aquariums, is that if anything goes wrong, they don't want to be held at fault. Also by doing so, you can sell the "true" aquarium sealer for much more.
