From my experience,............. don't freak out if they don't eat for the first week. I was concidering returning him because he wouldn't eat. Rather have him live and go to someone else then die on me. They're real docile, and pretty much stay almost motionless all the time. I'm reeeeeaally happy with my yellow tail. He don't mess with no one, eats well, and he's the fastest, I mean THE FASTEST in my tank. First he started off only eating feeders then I got him now eating frozen squid, anchovie and silver sides. I've only had him for about a month. Him and my VATF are my two fav fish. They got the nastiest grills too.

theres two species of freshwater barracuda thta are useually sold if there characins that is but yellow tail and red tail are useually sold red tails get about 12'' and yellows get around 16'' both need very long tanks when larger and use speed to catch there food so a 6 foot tank should be used for adults bigge for yellow tails but they don't grow to fast so you got time
expect them to be beat up they aren't that tuff and useually go throug hell to get to you so when you get them put them in a quarantine tank with a little salt and they should recover
also they won't eat the first two days or so but when they do it will most likely be feeder fish so have a few ready while hard its not impossible to get them off live foods so work on that as soon as you get them there a little pricey and it would suck to loose them to a parasite from feeder goldfish

They will only eat live foods . And they do take a while to grow . I had one for
about a year and it got to about the 10 inch mark . I had the yellow .

I just got a freshwater barracuda. In the 1st 2weeks it was solid silver with a dot on the tail and near the gills and also had a thin green strip on the side. Now it turned 2tone with a solid black top, dark green strip and silver bottom & the tail fin turned black. Does anyone know what kind of freshwater barracuda I got?:confused::confused:
They can be trained to take silversides and krill. Hafta starve them.

mine took to silversides rather easily but they wouldn't even look at krill.
