:raspberry today i went to a local petco around my neighborhood and bought a juvinile tropical gar for $6.99. the funny part about this is that the employee dident have any clue what a gar was he thought it was a common loach, this goes to show how many experts really work in petco           suckas

really, the funny part about this little incident is the petco employee had no clue what he was talking about, his name tag said proven proffesional

, thats great. Let me tell you something, most employees are not professional anything. To become a "fish expert", all I have to do is take a course and pass a test and then I'm the "fish expert" :)

This may just be me being skeptical, but are you sure you got a tropical gar? i'm surprised there would be one at a PetCo...

That would require them to pay more! They couldnt possibly do that! lol I've picked up tons of awesome fish that lfs did know what what they were...its a great thing. I say they keep the morons there so i can get more deals:)

no, no coincidence at all man. THere are certain fish that are just on the availability list and tropical gars just happen to be one of them. Mostly stick with the bread and butter, but with every blue moon, you'll see something a little more rare, for petco's standards. :)

The Petcos I've been to aren't bad at all. The PetsMarts I've been to however... :grinno:
I once bought a South American Red Tail Catfish that the guy sold to me as an Aneus Cory for $1.62. He also "adviced" me that the cory got BIG. And he procedded to tell me that they get as big as a common pleco at 6". I then found a PetsMart up in Salinas where I lived for 3 months for an intership. They were selling small koi fish as feeders! :swear: I would've got some koi for a couple of cents, but I have no where to put them :(

just curious, does your trop. gar have a "trident" on its head? i had to go through hoops and pay $150 plus shipping to get my hands on a trop. gar....

i hear what your saying suckerfish. T-gar is not easy to get, specially in the US. i want to see some pics so we can ID. cuz some gars can be very difficult to identify. there's a good article on gars, and special section of T-gar by Solomon David couple of months ago on Aquarium Hobyist Magazine. great article!
PICS?

there's realistically no way that it was a true tropical gar for $6.99 at a petco. i would imagine its a florida gar since they are considered 'tropical' by some fish stores and you'll get all kinds of misinformation about them. nice price for any gar, but i highly doubt it's a tropical. if you want it confirmed post a pic ;)

Could you post a pic of it ?
I very much doubt it is Atractosteus tropicus, These fish are only aquacultured in Mexico and Central America and I somehow highly doubt Petco would be importing them given the fact nothing else would be offered that would make it wothwhile to just import this species alone.

One other thought here.....a lot of pet stores sell Boulengerella species as 'gars' and I've even seen them referred to at a local store here as a 'Tropical Gar'. They are, of course, not 'true' gars but are Ctenoluciids in the Order Characiformes.
They are certainly very 'gar-like' in general appearance and are certainly tropical. I've included a picture from FishBase below for reference purposes only.

I bought 3 seven stripe fronts at a petsmart for 9.99 each. The guy working there thought they were large african zebras they had in another tank. I couldn't believe the guy was serious.
