To all who are in Florida with me.... Hurricane season approaches!! Get your asses out there and get some bait pumps/aerators (batt. op. of course). Hurricane Charlie took a toll on one of my tanks that was overstocked....kinda. Bio was stable and it looked awesome but..... cause of death, Oxygen starvation in under 8 hours, I couldn't stay awake any longer  So 600 dollars in peacocks later (55gal) I say to you "prepare children, the worst is coming"

dude get couple extra car batterys from a junkyard tell them you want some used one that hold a charge still. get a 12 volt to 110 converter. and use it to power your tanks when powergoes out

ultimately....you're a MacGyver Mofugger like I and thats what I did once the first store re-opened that I could find that had an inverter(then had a full tank of gas to keep firing my truck off to turn it into a generator). Thats what saved my butt w/the rest of the tanks. Only problem was that I couldn't stay awake any longer the night that Charlie hit and when I woke up the next morning....BLOODSHED  I guess thats why I wanted to give everyone a heads up. The news has said it and all the data I've looked at (Associate in Aviation Weather) says that this hurricane season will be as bad if not worse. Don't want anyone to go through what I went through. Hail Midas :headbang2 He mentioned what I didn't.
P.S. to all.... The inverter I had ran 14 Aquariums.....everything on them (just make sure it can produce the wattage to support the load)

I am going to buy a generator sometime in the next couple of weeks,, I think it is a must for all of us fish keepers down here during the hurricane season.

Thank God i live in san diego and dont worry bout hurricanes. all i worry about is when a big earthquake comes and knocks my tanks to the floor. I wont have to worry bout electricity, but i have my own worries. I filled my bath tub with fish for 3 days when my 100 terrarium turned aquarium split at the side. dont know the exact cause of the problem, prob had something to do with keepin it full then emptying it to use as a terrarium then refilling to use as an aquarium again. either way, fish emergencys suck. BE PREPARED!!!!!! Boy Scout's motto.

Patrick the gachua breeder bought the big converter that wallmart sells when he had no electric for a day or so when i helped him move. it only like 1100 watts. Powerd his 36 inch or bigger tv, 2 or 3 tank heaters, dvd player, xbox, lights for the tank lamp for the room, radio to listen to, he used it for everything. Only problem he turned the car off and it sucked car bat dry as **** . lucky he had a stick and not automatic and was able to restart the car. Also liveing in florida for the shortterm. you shouldnt have to run anything except the filters due to it bein warm and stuff all the time down there.

the haggen battery powerd airpumps will run 12 to 24 hours on a set of Ds batterys. they work pretty good for running a sponge filter in emergencys. i have one used for for bringing back my fish from florida.but do not buy the yellow one they sell at wallmart it garbage junk **** smells better then that thing works

At least you have a season try Alaska we average at least 5 earth quakes a year that will get your atten. And a number of oh well ones. Winter here start in Oct - Apr and by the end of Oct we are under snow till Mar. Temperatures regularly stay below 10 and we have long runs well below -50 for weeks and weeks. I can sustain reduced operation for 6 months. Don't wait buy now while its regular price instead of Storm Prices.....Not that anyone would take advantage. My basic generator output requirements (Well water,Lights, cooking/refigerator, Fish tanks, and communications). I can also shoot a mouse right out my back door. Theres a nice young bull looking at me right now

Not that I don't have sympathy for you but.... Cold doesn't flood your house, tear the roof off or throw trees at you. Cold doesn't destroy the car, ruin all communications, or again Hurl trees at you :grinno: Not saying that cold doesn't suc too. It's just sometimes a bit more tricky here than flippin the gen. on. You better find a nice little hiding spot for it or he won't be running long. I do agree though, buy now!!! After using a 400W and a 1200W inverter a 400 will run a crapload of hanging filters (some are as low as 1/2w) and a fair amount of regular sump pumps(usually around 60W starting, nominal wattage drops after she's fired off so you can get more on if you start them one at a time) And Make sure you keep your gas tanks and extra little tanks topped off as long as possible before the canes hit. You won't be bying gas for the next week!! I assure you of that. Fl. got raped last year....Daytona was only really ravaged by two even though like 4 hit. Like I said, I do bet that 6 mo. of limited ops is a pain in the ass, but I wish I could predict hurricanes better....I'd have my stock to bare minimums. Another note....simple aeration works, don't worry too much about getting pumps running if you can't....my pumps were off for three days till I could get some excessive electrical rigging going on. Also beware of jumpers! My roomate lost his 10" male jag breeder...some fish get really jumpy when the O2 is getting low, lots of air and keep those lids on tight. We actually got him back in the tank and revived but the femal didn't accept him after that and killed him in bout 2 hours when we had to go in search of Ice. This season is gonna be a pisser folks, I again strongly agree with the previous dude. STOCK NOW SMILE LATER.

Don't forget that we have until the 12th to buy some prep stuff tax free. I got a decent generator at Home Depot the other day for $600, with some extras included.

there are many ways to do this if you can afford it get a generator. If you cant afford a generator car battery is good but it can be dangerous as well dealing with car battery. Acid , electricution, and etc. If you need to put o2 into the water use hydrogen peroxide if you dont know the correct dosage then look it up or pm me I will tell you what I do.

I live in Florida also. I'd say this season so far so good. I didnt lose any of my fish last year and I hope I wont this year. I got's my generator and Battery powered airpumps, and if all else fails...every half hour blow air through your air tube into you tank.... it works!! Or go to a bait shop and get one of those buckets with attatched filter.
