I would not put an 8" gar in a 55g. Too small already...

Only if it were a temperary holding, hospital/quarantine tank would I keep a 8" gar in a 55g. If kept too long, it will eventually, develop a curved "kinked" spine/back. Also, may cause injury to it's nose/snout area, from rubbing against the tank wall. A 55 is just not wide enough.
But don't let any of this stop you from keeping gars... Try to get some smaller sized gars, and grow them out from young stage. You would probably get the most enjoyment doing so, allowing them to adapt and 'grow out' of the 55g, rather than seeing them stress out from the begininng, and maybe perhaps die?!! Whatever you do, I'm sure you will try to make the best possible decisions and judgement calls that you possibly can, in growing and keeping gars. Being a dedicated responsible hobbyists/keeper What more can a person ask for?? Anyways, GL and enjoy! :)

this fish will eat any fish small enough to be eaten whole. Other fish which are to large to eat will be ignored.
