i have been bitten by many fish such as red bellied pirrana, pacu, oscar, wolf fish, but mostly its charachins that have bitten me, so if you have a tank with any of the larger ones dont aquascape unless the fish arent in that tank

ps, wolf fish and tigers hurt the most

OMG...I am constantly watching out whenever my RES gets angry, I DON'T want a turtle to bite me. Eversince I was little I was told they do not let go. When he was at the vets the assistant and vet kept waving and moving their fingers in front of his face...he was hissing. I even caught myself swatting them away. If my turtle bites them for their stupidity they are gonna loose a finger before my turtle looses his head.

As for the tetras...the only ones I have are Buenos Aries tetra...I'm not worried. :D

charachins are wicked. I love them. And, they go from tiny to scary big. I usually keep the community type charkins.

The most aggressive fish I've ever kept was a tomato clown. That fish wouldn't let you put your hand in the aquarium. It would literally jump out of the aquarium to bite you. Not only that, but it would go for the skin in between your fingers and it would death roll! just like a croc!

I was bit by my dorado(salminus maxillosis) on my index finger when it was 6 inches. Drew blood, no stitches. I was drunk at the time, so it bled for a while. Like being cut by a razor. Clean and straight. Think it was just one tooth that did the damage.

One of our Oscars was getting so agressive that we couldn't clean the bottom of the tank without getting bitten, not bad enough to draw blood, but it would hurt like hell! We talked to our "fish guy" at Petco. This guy is sharp and keeps freshwater and marine fish himself, he said it's a dominance thing, get a good thick glove and put your hand in the tank and let him beat on that glove, after a while he'll give up and decide that you're bigger than he is. We went home, tried it and now when we put our hands in the tank they just all move to the other side.

I am a cook I cut a 2 to 3 pound Maine lobster in half directly down the middle and removed the rubberbands with a knife before placing him in the broiler (Melting rubber makes food taste bad) turned my head for a second and what ever life was left in him grabbed the tip of my pointer finger. I slipped it out before he did any real dammage but he did crack my finger nail down the middle. :swear: Hurt like !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WOW!:WHOA: it feels like i need to re-think on what i want for my tank. i won't enjoy fish that bites and gives me pain in the @#$... i'm feeding them why should they bite and besides in my opinion... i would like to have monster fish who know's who's the master. :grinyes: i never had any bad experience with any monster fish... i really don't keep those really agressive fish. my goldfish is the only one that bites me... because they like to eat! and eat and eat!:grinno:

Too true.

In my personal experience, it's angelfish that tend to be nippers. Whenever I stick my arm in my 55 gallon I get bit. It's not painful, but not exactly comfortable ;)

worst bit I ever took was either a 10ft red tail boa tagging me in the face or a 4ft caimen snatching my hand. Both jacked me up really good and hurt like hell. Also just so you know getting bit by a blue tongue skink is like getting your finger slammed in a car door. I got away from reptiles so I didn't have to worry about getting bit but looks like fish are no better. Oh well they are still fun and relaxing...

I was just rereading this thread when it struck me,
Piranha and pacu are also characins.
The red belly pacu has been widely introduced as a pond cultured food fish in tropical areas and in New guinea where it is common to work naked when using nets in pond two people have died by having their genitalia bitten off by large pacu, ouch.

I thank God that my Blackbelt Cichlid doesn't hurt that bad when he bites. I still feed him by hand sometimes and when he's really hungry, he can pull a "moby dick" and come up out of the water before you can get the food down into it. I think his aim up really close isn't so hot!;)

Ahh the fun topic!

Lets see. I've been bitten by my old Jag a couple times. Once when hand feeding above the water he jumped to get a fish I was dangling. Jumped too far and nipped my finger. just enough to get a pin prick with his fang and draw blood. Another time he got me cause he and his lady were breeding and I got too close. that onedidn't hurt as much. He was just warning me to stay away. I did do the whole establish dominance with my cichlids so they for the most part knew that if they messed with me I would smack um. you really don't have to hit them just send a huge wave of water at them to let them understand that you are alot stronger then they are. You have to do that when their young or it wont work.

Also been bit by my old silver arro. was almost two feet. and again I was droppin food in the tank. He came up and bit me between my index and thumb. didn't hurt. he realized I wasen't food and didn't try and take anything with him.

recently I have a few convicts. they had bred and were in the main tank and I was movin some rocks around for them. (two females with a batch each co raising them) And they were attacking me. that was funny cause dosen't hurt at all. They ran from the flicking finger tho.

I have a 6" tiger right now. he stays as far away from me as possible when i'm in the tank.
I have a deep fear of when he gets bigger tho. I like my hands and arms. so I don't know how that is gonna work out.

once when i was out on my kayak i hooked into a little 15 inch or so halibut, defiently not a monster but it decied to clamp down on my pinky with its 1 1/2 inch teeth like a pitbull and procede to flap about now i never put my finger in a buts mout, dead or alive, specially the 22 inch plus. thats about the worst but ive been bit my yellow bullheads, i thought it had crushed my finger bone, gar, and bowfin. but the halibut topped it all.

I have never been bit myself-luckily, but I dared my friend to put his finger inside my tank full of redsnakeheads one time. They were still babies about 4-5" and one of them clamped down on his finger and he freaked out and yanked his hand out of the tank with the snakehead still attatched to his finger. He yanked out with such force that he flung the snakehead all the way accross the room. I laughed my arse off and put the snakehead back in the tank and said, " Now that's how they catch em in Thailand."

Only fish I've been betten by is tiger barbs, its just annoying. Almost gotten bit by crawfish and RES. I used to have a aligator snapping turtle (awesome guy) and he got 1/2'' from biting my brother. I imagine that would have been a lot more painful than a RES...

When I used to work at a lfs, I was grazed by a Vampire Tetra's teeth. It didn't draw any blood, but there was a lilttle cut that looked like a razor blade went over the top of my finger.

I've been bitten by a 6" Oscar and that hurt! Drew some blood on that one.

And just the other day, I was hand feeding my friend's puffer when it jumped out to attack the krill, but got my finger instead. Luckily, it hit the first knuckle so there was no damage, but I screamed like a little girl

i gotta friend that traps huge snapping turtles, he handles like 50 a year, you are gonna get bit when you handle that many, anyway the only way to get a snapper to release his grip is to put a read or stick up his nose!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!for real it works!!
