If you want to get some crabs for your tank, you should get brackish water and a place for them to get out of the water (like driftwood sticking out of the water. My guys likes to chill on the leave of my sword that reach the surface of the water). For food, they can eat any type of sinking pellets.

You don't need brackish water for all crabs. Nor, do you need a place for them to leave the water. Try malawi blue crabs. They're a fully aquatic freshwater swimming crab that doesn't forage on land.

I just got a fiddler and he needs to come out of the water from time to time, but he usually just hides.

Will a freshwater crab chop your plants or leave them alone?
the little ones I had didn't bother the plants, I don't know the species they were.
I've got red claw crabs, and i've had them in a tank for a couple of years, and theyve done fine without land what so ever-completely submurged. As for the plants they don't bother them at all.

I have two crabs and they do extremely well. You never have to worry about them going hungry. As long as there are fish in the tank.
oddball, can you get pics of the blue malawi crabs? From my experience, fiddlers are fine with plants but I once had a red claw crab chop up my amazon sword. They would clip away at base of the leaves until they remove the entire leaf...then move on to the next...

as far as i know of, most crabs are scavengers, so they eat almost anything in their way. that includes plants. so its best not to put plants with them. some day when u just forget to feed them, u'll find your plant eaten. but on other days even when u feed them, u'll find ur plants uprooted. juz a mischievious crab at work i'd say.
