There is no such fish as a freshwater moray eel. Moray eel's are saltwater fish.
True, some unscrupulous or just plain dumb/ignorant sellers will sell "freshwater" morays (or call them "converted" eels) but these fish WILL die in freshwater, within a matter of months if not weeks.

the lfs here is taking new orders for them @ 15.00 each. i was in there yesterday and thats all one salesman could talk about. i guess he thought i wanted one, but i was asking cuz i was in shock they had them in fw too.

Most eels sold as freshwater morays are Gymnothorax tile which are a brackish to marine species. There are a few other species sold as such but that is by far the most common. Periodically you see strictly marine species that people are trying to pass off as having been acclimated to freshwater.
There are no freshwater morays, though there are types of freshwater eels.

Some do fine (May not be happy but survive) when young but then need saltwater as they grow and watch out because some grow bigger than you could imagine!
Dont get one unless you have a saltwater pond

Although they do need salt, g. tile do quite well once they have adjusted and begin feeding. I have had a pair for quite some time now. They are nearly 22" long. Here is a couple of pics to show the color differences in the two.

Actually there is a true freshwater moray, but it's rare in the hobby.

This thread (http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=77941&highlight=freshwater+moray) lead me to believe that even supposedly "true" freshwater morays are not permanent freshwater residents.
Which species are you referring to?
