View Full Version : What Crenicichla and how many?

How many species of pikes do you have? And how many from each species? Sizes? Let us know! We are a 'rare' breed so to say...not many people keep pike cichlids, so we have to stick together and help support each other. Thankfully, people are FINALLY starting to recognize and appreciate pikes for the awesome fish that they are! Anywho, I'll start off, but tis subject to change since I'm constantly lookin for more, new pikes! :woot: Anywoot, I have:
3 - Crenicichla sp. 'xingu II'
3 - Crenicichla sp. 'cobra'
My pikes range from 4" to almost 7". When I moved them almost a month ago now they were in the 3.5" to 6" range....and I have been power feeding them...haha.

Funny you post this today because I just got my first and have no clue what kind, but I am pretty sure that due to a quick lesson from peanut, it is a she and a saxitilis pike. She is around 5" and got kind of beat up on her tail (missing half the fin) but showed the nicest colors, including a orange belly, so I went with her for a reasonable $8.99. Peanut maybe you can start the ID session with me please.
P.S. Peanut thanks for the months of pike encouragement it finally paid off. ;)

LoL!! No prob yo! Love gettin more peeps addicted to these amazing fish! I'll get to every body eventually...haha. Anywho, that IS a female, looks like a Crenicichla sp. 'belly crawler'...not sure if its a venezuelan one though, since it has more bars. Very kewl. But yeah, definately a female...lol. Notice the ocelli in the dorsal...;). Its not a Saxatilis pike either, its actually from the Reticulata group pikes, which are characterized mostly by their atrophied swimbladders...thus layin on their bellies a lot...lol.

There are four cobras in the tank. I found them in Chicago in November. I've had the black-barred red hooks for a while, though. They are possibly the most gluttonous fish that I own. I had them w/ the Xingu IIs for a while. Unfortunately the IIs began sampling them.

Holy crap nadus...my xingu II's really DID mature faster than yours...what the heck? Mine are already starting to go through their second color change! I think some of them might actually be in their adult colors...i believe I have two males and one female. I need to get lighter colored sand in there cuz the dark sand makes their colors darker so you can't see their kewl patterns as well. Makes the cobras patterns AWESOME though...so crisp...you should put yours on darker sand! haha

Pikes are great....they have 'elastic' stomachs that allow them to GORGE themselves....its a great adaptation for bein highly piscivourus...makes keepin them with other fish more of a challenge though...lost more than one fish to the greed of my pikes. Also, mature females are just naturally more plump, especially when they are gravid (wit eggs)

They were doing fine with each other, but the convicts didn't like the new male.
So I switched him into his own tank so he could beef up a bit. And three weeks later he kicked the bucket :( . He was kind of beat up when I got him but I thought he was gonna make it. I am looking for another male becuase my female won't have any other females in her tank. I tried a few times with different females, but she wouldn't have it.

Just getting started with crenicichla...but give me time :D...
1. So far, just 1 that I think is a regani, pouting in quarantine. I'll try to get some pics for positive ID when I get him into a real tank.
2. I have a group of Crenicichla menezesi that should be here within the next week or 2...these will be small ones to grow out...
3. I'm drooling over a couple of marmorata and strigata, but will have to find tankspace and a divider before even thinking about it. I have a 180 that currently houses a bunch of Africans that's under consideration for one or the other of these...assuming I don't find cave and go with the same seller's "red Tapajos" (he has 2 males...would want to see about finding a female...).
4. Lfs has something that came in as a "gold spangled" pike cichlid...they are going to see what the supplier says it is...which I may or may not get, depending on what it is, what they'll sell it for.

Careful about the tapajos red on aquabid...one of the sellers is sellin some that don't really look like tapajos reds...;)...but might just be a crappy pic. There are two differnt sellers...so yeah. I suggest you get the feel for pikes before you try keepin them in groups. Pikes are AGGRESSIVE....especially towards each other....so you gotta plan carefully.

These guys are brutes. I started with six 4' a few months ago in a 320 gallon pond. After about 3 months I was down to four. They are now separated. And they didn't like tankmates in their pond, either :) I'm trying to get them grown enough to see about pairing them off.

Yeah, I've gotten some stuff from Rapps - my last batch of Hericthys bocourti came from him. And actually I've got some lenticulata ordered from Jeff for the end of this week. Their price just seems to go up all the time. Only a year or so ago they weren't nearly so pricey. Damn this pike craze :)
Tapajos 2 is cobra. Tapajos 1 is Tapajos red (which is much sharper looking as an adult than cobra - which you've duly noted before!).
