Had a power outage yesterday at my house, lasted about 4 seconds. I checked all of my tanks but forgot to check my piranha tank since it's in my living room on another floor...

Well, the filter did not restart when the power came back on. Had 4 red bellies in there approx 5", when I realised this morning one was floating, and the three others were near the surface as if they were looking for air.

Moved them to my quarantine tank, cleaned their tank and filter and restarted it all. Going to test the water tonight before I put them back in, in case there is ammonia buildups.

Lesson learned: Always check every filter/heater/pump after power outage to make sure they restarted !!!

I'm sure many of us have stories just like this. It takes a couple mistakes like these to make us neurotic about double and triple checking equipment.

Sorry for the loss. I'll never forget the day I woke up and found my largest piranha halfway eaten.

Total bummer, even short interruptions in power can cause problems, I had a pump restart while dry and burn out the motor.

It could have been worse...a friend of mine lost an entire Cichlid tank that way.
