This is why Oscars should not be sold in such high volumes. People think they are some undestructable predator that will eat anything and everything. They are the most misconceived fish, other then Pirhanas.
Long Story Short -
A guy bought an Oscar from PetSmart, a huge one infact, but they sold it to him for the small sized oscars just to get rid of it. He said he has had Oscars before, and they shouldnt be concerned about the good home he would be giving it. He took it home, put it in his bath tub, and fed it chicken and beef. It died the next day, and he came back and wanted a refund?
WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE?!?!?!
(My old boss at PetSmart gave him an earful, and would never let him buy fish again)

here in sweden you must be certified to be aloud to work in a pet shop... despite this i had to help the girl at the store when i was there picking up a delivery today... she had no idea where to put the new fish. she didn't want to mix different color platys but thought it was ok to put five black ghosts together and to keep a RTC and a shovel nose together in a 30gal tank.

Sounds like the "certification" standards are pretty low.

i think you can specialize in different things and the rodent/cat/dog/horse-girls sometimes get stuck with selling fish. even if they have basic knowledge but lack serious interrest i think they're in the wrong department.

I went to PetsMart yesterday. There was a pretty hot girl working in the fish department. Just out of curiousity, I asked her if the Oscars were friendly enough to put in a tank of Mollies and she said, "I don't see a problem with that." As she bent over to clean the bottom tank with her @$$ crack exposed. I was amazed at her reply :eek: But I enjoyed the view :naughty: I'm pretty sure that PetsMart is using her looks to sell more stuff and hope that no one will asked her any questions and are just be dumbfounded by her beauty so they don't ask her any questions. Smart move, if money is all that matters, I have to admit.

one in about 6 of the pet stores i go actually has some experianced aquatist working there sadly though theyre managment although they teach their employees some basic rules the bottom line is he or she is making minium wage and dosnt plan on staying longer then it takes and the fish usally suffer so many times i'm in the fish area and overhear some newbie with a 10gal tank asking if a shark be okay in my tank only to hear the employee snicker after not a good thing it should be made manitory to take a test and obtain a permit to keep fish or any other exotic animal certainly this should apply in a case where some speices are endangerd or even extinct in the wild ........ fish on

Dude I also work at Petsmart and some of the people I just want to slap. I for the most part can tell the people that have no idea what the hell is going on and I try to take them aside a guide them to make good choices when it comes to fish. Its hard when there is only one out of eight Petsmart in Richmond that is good. I have to fixs all the crap that the other stores mess up. I love telling people that they can't get fish I wish I could tell them why, but telling people that they are retarded is good for bussiness.

I used to work at a Petco. I was called an aquatic specialist. They made me take their training course. The instructor had know idea what he was talking about, and he was the one who had final say in the care of animals for a region. I did not stay quiet during the training. Several times I told him he was wrong, but he was most suprised when I was able to tell him why he was wrong. I won't shop at any of the big stores.

The LFS where we get all our fish has wonderful people who actually know what they're dealing with and talking about. I don't think I'd get the same quality of service from one of those large chain pet stores. They have a 24 hour fish guarantee that if your fish dies in the first 24 hours you bring it back, with your receipt and a water sample and they'll help you figure out what did your fish in. I just can't see large chain pet stores putting that much effort into ensuring future business. The girl that usually waits on us when we're getting fish does her research on what she's selling and can answer any questions we have. I believe we have referred her to MFK for help with the information that she can't find elsewhere.

not to get off the topic of morons at petshops, but you'll find them anywhere and everywhere. Doesn't matter what kind of store, office, business it is you will find them. I work in the medical field and anyone else that does can tell you that most patients are morons with no common sense. You will run into dumb people where ever you go but some of those kids in the pet store may be trying to learn as much as they can. I worked in an LFS through college and learned more from the customers then the people i worked with. Then again there are a lot of idiots that just don't give a damn.

I've worked at a pet store where my boss has told me to put baby angels in with silvers, even after I told him, and showed him why they weren't compatible. He still told to put them in the tank "temporarily", BS. He was an idiot, I told him to go play in traffic with the rest of the morons :wall: :ROFL: :wall:

I worked at Petco way back in the day. It was fun because my coworkers all knew there stuff. I venture in them now and then and try to help lead customers to make good choices when I can.
Sadly, this 'idiot fish keeper' mentality isn't limited to pet shops. I've seen worse in the zoo world. My favorite is a guy who used to shut 1/2 of the lights off on reef displays because (his words) "Too much light makes the algae grow too fast. This way I won't have to clean as much". :ROFL: Same guy used to run his protein skimmers low so he wouldn't have to clean them. Like Joel said, they're all over.

hahahah. speaking of oscars in bath tubs.... i once had a breeding pair of oscars and a juvenile RTC in my 60 gallon. one night i heard water dripping on metal. as i turned to look at my tank i saw the whole, back right hand side split at the seam. at the time i had no other tanks at my house so i put them into my bath tub. they stayed there for 2 days until i could get another tank. i did water changes of about 50% twice a day and had a powerhead in there for circulation. it was actually quite cool to go in to take a crap and be able to watch your fish swimming in your bath.
