Hey guys,

my parents thought they bought a 3" silver datnoid for their brackish water tank and i think my mom bought it with my dad not looking.
im in college and dont live for them, they arnt computer savvy so i volunteered to stick my neck out for them...

i posted in the datnoid section before i had pictures, but now that i do im asking for specie confirmation and some information on them like....
-fish size as adult?
-growth rate?
-is brackish ok? and tankmates with 3 scats?
-my parents like it, but want to care for it to the best of their knowledge, it was the LFS's fault for talking my mom into a mislabeled fish. they could support a nandus but a barramundi? if those things get as big as i think they do my parents aren't willing to invest in that monster long term.
-they bought it for 12.99... if they decide not to keep it once they have a species confirmation, should they
a) return the fish to the same LFS, get refund...
b)take it to a different LFS, try to trade it in for something more exspensive if this fish is worth more than 12.99...
C)any recomendation you have will be greatly apreciated...

thanks for your time

not a barramundi. Maybe a nandus or nile perch?

Pics, price, and availability lead me to believe Nandus Nandus.

I guess it could be a nile perch.....as I am not familiar with them and it does look very long/skinny for a Nandus.

I got my Nandus from an Earl May pet shop for 12.99 labeled as an Asian Leaf Fish.

it's a barra.. The dorsal is way different from nandus nandus/chinese perch not to mention markings, etc. Not nile perch either. I would return it unless they have a large large tank to grow it out.. Max size in home aquaria probably 4ft.. And growth rate at least 1" a month. I would think it could live in brackish as they breed in brackish, most of us keep them in full fresh water. And obviously you have it in brackish and it's fine.

Alot of fish store offer them as "silver dats" I suspect the wholesaler selling them mis-id's them and thus the fish store doesn't know better.

looks like a barra to not a nandus and doesn't look like a perch
awesome fish if you have a tank for a fish that grows as big as you they get huge so if you don't have a big tank you may have to trake it back

hahaha i dont think my parents want to invest in a pond for a 12.99 fish, he's cool, hoping it could have been a nandus, would have been able to keep it that way

should they take it back to the same LFS? or do you guys think they should try to trade it in at a different LFS for a different fish thats worth more than 12.99?

Definitely a Barramundi, I've kept them in brackish water with Scats with no problems.

japanese perch?

As far as taking it back barramundi that size don't have a very value anyways. Most of the time that size is just a few dollars. I would take it back to the same store as they'll probably easily take it back. OR you can try your luck with another store if you want.. up to you.. :)

I Had Five barras at just ova 1 an half inches now all but one survied (due to one crazy barra killing the rest of them) now he is a little 2 and a half inches. He didnt look a nice shape for his size but have just come back from a week fishing trip and now hes plump i think if you keep the by themself the have a rapid growth rate but my barras with 9 other fish (grunters Scats ETC)
