I know quite a few people own common wolves (hoplias malabricus). I jus wanted to know who has the largest one here. I have heard that they cn reach 2ft but the biggest I have ever seen is about 15in. I would love to see some pics, so lets get to posting...;)
And the wolf in Wu Chins video looked large along w/ all of his other nice fish but I wonder who has the biggest one. Thanks

Oh...ok, well yeah I was talking about malas but lacerdaes are fine to, considering I cn actually afford them. The Aimaras are only a mere dream at the moment...LOL...but I did find a guys Wolf on here that was 24in and it had ate his 10in Dorado he put in the tank wit it. So I guess he has the biggest common on the site...?

Who was that. Mala's rarely if ever reach 24 inches. I'd love to see some pics of this guy. There are pics of my old lacerdae up on here. He was about 18 inches when I sold him. Also, don't be fooled that lacerdae are easy to come by or that they are on a similar level in price to malas. They go for a lot of money if you can find one. Just because someone calls it a lacerdae doesn't make it a lacerdae.

I cant remember the guys name but he had a female Mala. Go to the search and I think the title of the thread is like 2ft Wolf vs 10" Dorado. That should take you to it. Im not sure if the Mala was a solid 2ft but its rather large and thick. And yeah you're right about someone saying its one and its not. But if it were a genuine Lacerdae then Ive seen them at least in the hundreds price range, while the Aimaras are always in the thousands....WHICH SUCKS...LOL

If you're speaking of northern va then you have some really good options out there, not many strictly fish stores but some good shops nontheless. also you have access to many stores in MD and DC which you can get to in under 45mins in most cases.

I don't think that wolf is 2'. I'd say closer to 18" and that dorado looks like it'd probably be around 5-6". A 10" dorado would have had a much more solid colored tail. They aren't usually still transparent like that at 10". Still a nice fish though. The wolf is a mala, just to confirm. And just so you get an idea on price for lacerdae, mine was $500 at 5", and that's not including shipping.

Hmmm....thats decent....NOT CHEAP, but no AIMARA PRICE EITHER....LOL....Do you think 5in is about as small as you will find em, cuz they're cheaper the smaller they are correct...?

Um, not necessarily. It depends on the rarity of the varient, not just in the US, but in the hobby and in the wild. What I mean is that lacerdae are very rare in the US because Japan and other asian countries are willing to pay top dollar for their fish, that's one level of rarity. Then there's also the issue of their availability in the wild and whether or not the wolf is in an area accessable for capture. So there's different factors that will add up to the rarity of the wolf. Larger wolves don't ship very well either. Most of the time when they come in, they have really bad ammonia burn and torn fins and usually come with some parasites (like fish lice, etc.). All these factors add up to the price of the wolf. But, sometimes the bigger fish are hard to sell because not everyone has a tank to accomidate a larger size wolf. That being said, you'll get the most for your money buying a larger wolf that's in good condition. The smaller ones are a lot harder to come by because they are a lot more manageable in size and the price is cheaper, so when they are available, they aren't for long. Sorry I know I probably made this confusing, but there's a lot of factors that go into what's available and why. I just tryed to cover all basis for you so you have a general overview on the subject.

Thanks KRSwop1....well all that being said, makes me nervous about ordering online. But I dont know about any shops that carry Wolves here. So guess I gotta go online huh...?

Yeah. Online dealers are the best way to go if you're looking for something a little more rare than your run of the mill LFS fish. Just find a trustworthy online vendor, many of which are on this site, and ask for pics of the actual wolf before you place your order. You can always send the pic to me if you need help IDing.
