Thanks for the replies. I was told they were spotted gars so it is good if you guys think they are too.:)
I will try and post some full tank shots tonight. There is no background on the tank, I just live in an old house that has stone walls. I like the look so I didn't bother with a background.
The gars are about 4-5" and seem to be feeding fine. Have given them bloodworm, pellets and prawn but not interested in the prawn at the moment but love bloodworm and pellets.

looks awsome but chiclids and gars dont go well together because they increase the chances of the gar getting scared and breaking its back by running into the sides of the tanks

I did read about broken backs but these are geophagus cichlids so they are peaceful. That is why they are in with the rays which are also easliy bullied. If the geos get too much then I will move them to another tank.

i'd be much more worried about the fact that the tank is so large for the gars

Why???

Why???
Small gar in a big tank is sometimes a serious problem. I personally feel you do not have that problem given the info presented so far. Fish are feeding well and seem to be rather well adapted to the tank. Just keep an eye on them and be cautious and your doing OK.

Thanks Polypterus. I will keep an eye on them. They seem happy at the moment.
Still not sure what is the problem with a big tank?

if a gar has too much room to run...they often times will dart into the glass causing spinal problems and more often than not...death. as said above...just be cautious and keep an eye on the fish.

OK thanks for that. Usually you hear of tanks being too small - First time I heard of it being too big but I see what you mean.
They seem really settle and haven't been spooked at all. I will keep an eye on them. I can put them in a smaller till they grow a bit if needs be.

Husbandry of these fish is a bit different from the conventional ideas you would use with many other species. Big tanks can indeed be a bad thing with these fish... so can too small of a tank. Trick is to keep it balanced.
