I've longed to catch a view of these fishes with my own eyes ever since I saw a picture online (I believe on Arofanatics). Well, I went to the doctor today and I went to the fish stores around the area and guess what I saw...:hearts:

2 Platinum silver arowanas, at 7" for $55 each. I almost had the urge of buying one... the color is simply amazing, the store also have regular silver arowanas and there's simply no comparison.

Dude..just a word of warning...true platinum silvers..can command a price up to US36K retailing...and I think the ones you saw, for $55..is really something to ponder upon...

did the store label the silvers as 'Platinum silvers' on the tank?

One trick in the trade is this....they can keep the silvers in a white fibre tank or white styrofoam boxes for a period of time before sale...as time pass..the silvers will naturally turn whitish due to the environment it is kept in....

so, once they are taken out..they really look platinum and all white out...they look just as good...

but trust me..once you bought them home..and keep them in a normal tank environment..just for a period of 2 weeks...the silver will turn back to its original tone of color..

so, dun be dubbed into getting one...

i strongly agreed!

Bro rocky and me has ever came across a electric blue xb at a local LFS....the colour is pure white.......even the tail is yellow. Both of us thought that it must a platinium. but the LFS owner told us that its just a EBXB............. :grinyes:

Nowadays white tank treatment is so common.:D

M|L
05-21-2005, 5:57 PM
Nope, there's not "white tank treatment" or such. I went back to the store today and saw the fishes again, out of the 4 silver arowanas they have, only 2 has that "platinum" coloration. They are only labeled as silver arowanas (they do, however, have a huge 2ft silver arowana labeled as a platinum).

You think maybe someone made a mistake and sent the wrong fish out to the store?

Ming how do the eyes look? Maybe its a leucistic arowana?
Man i feel like driving over to chinatown now.

Bottom line, if they were TRUE platinum aros--they would carry a huge price tag!

There is no confusing one, and if a platinum were available, they'd only have one (if possible) not multiple platinums.

Platinums are so rare, arowana enthusiasts desire them and most all have NEVER seen one in person, let alone a few in a LFS for a few extra dollars over the cost of a common silver.

I remember last year seeing the "PINK" arowana for sale, selling at about $10 more than a silver, it was nothing but a common silver with just a little more pinkish hue than the average silver, which I'm sure as the fish matures it'll look just like a typical silver.

I think the platniums that most of us covet are the Malasyan Golden platnums, or another form of Asian with platnum coloration. A platinum silver (S. American) just seems like a light color defect. Not something I'd want.

M|L
05-21-2005, 7:49 PM
the fish is not pink, the coloration is metallic white, really white. like I said, there were normal silver arowanas in the same store which I compared to, they were definitely "different". the store also has a 2ft silver labeled as "platinum".

I'm not saying it is a "pink" or of pink color, I was using it as an example as to how LFS's will label.

For example: the "Blue" & "Black" arowanas both are Osteoglossum ferrerai , therefore, they are really Black arowanas. The major collections of Black arowanas have been heavily restricted in Brazil, now they are more commonly collected in Columbia, there is a slight color difference with more blue hue in their fins as sub-adults, though some may call the Blue arowana Osteoglossum ferrerai sp. and try to charge more for 'em--They are still Black arowanas just changing the name, because as they get beyond 18'' or so they are identical to Black arowanas (depending on diet and water quality will enhance or diminish coloration).

I'm sure the LFS you're talking about is calling 'em Platinum arowanas. What I'm stating is they are not,
#1 reason is the price!,
#2 LFS's label fish incorrectly all the time calling them what ever they want,
#3 Platinum arowanas are extremely rare in any species of arowana (Asians, South American or Australians).

no, the store did not label the fish as "platinum", the only fish that is labeled as a "platinum" was a 2ft silver arowana. the fish I'm talking about are merely 6-7".

"Snow white" Silver Arowana/platinum? question

Posted By: souvigna (ts-church-p5.cancom.net)

"Snow white" Silver Arowana/platinum? How rare is this fish? I saw one in Beijing...and I bought it.
How much are they going for?

REPLY BY UNOAQUATIC:

Be careful when buying these fish at high price as many are regular silvers. Unless albino silver with red eyes is rare.

Silver - Snow Arowana----rarer than Platinum

i didnt think platinums could be topped. Guess they should call that a Diamond arrow :P

Terricloth
05-25-2005, 2:55 PM
Platinum is much more rare than diamonds (one of the most abundant precious gems, thank giant monopolies for the huge demand/price). Now alexandrite, that's rare. But I digress, even in "snow white" S/A aros are ugly.

05-25-2005, 6:12 PM
Learn something new every day... but is a 20 grams of platinum more expensive than 20 grams of a gem-quality diamond?

M|L
05-25-2005, 6:40 PM
They weren't labeled as "platinums", that's why I said the store probably got lucky and got in these "platinums" at the price of a regular silver arowana. Which might explain why they're $55.

Those silvers were just as bright "white" as the pictures you just posted above.

I guess you just won't believe me, but I can tell you that I've seen lots of silver arowanas and the two that I saw definitely looked different.

M|L
05-25-2005, 6:46 PM
Perhaps I should just buy them home and take some pictures myself!!! lol I'm telling you all, whether what I saw were "platinum", "snow", or "white", or "whatever" name you want to call it, I can tell you that the silver arowanas I saw has the metallic white coloration, with jet black eyes.

:)

If you're in NYC, go check the store out, they might still have it.

I agree- unless is a fish store with NO IDEA what its doing and they thought they were the same thing.. which don't get me wrong I"ve seen my share of thoes stores, I doubt its a platinum..

the jet black eyes are intriguing.. normally silvers have rather human like eyes dont' you think? (meaning a very defined pupil and outter white area)

Hi brudder dude...

it may be more rare, but the average selling price of platinum is only twice that of gold!

Dude..u better believe it that there is....

Platinum is the term given to aros...be it asian, south americans or aussie..whereby they have the unique absolute white pigmentation on their scales..making them paper white...

it can happen to X-backs, red aros, pearl aros (jardini), black aros, silver aros..etc...

A Platinum Silver is something like a Black/Red/ Gar. Even if u got the money, the fish might not even be available. The chances of 'someone making a mistake & sent the wrong fish 2 the store' is as good as striking lottery.
