Is this a good buy? I called a breeder today and talked to him and I can shwo you some of his fish that he has bred, btu I reall ylike his angels. I figure about $2.75 a piece isn't bad right?

I figure 12 will be plenty in the 75, but If I have to I could maybe put some in the 125 if they get too aggressive.

12 is an excellent start and if you know the breeder to have good fish then that sounds like a great deal.

You won't find prices cheaper then that short of buying in bulk or finding wholesale importers that distribute to the public.

Yes, I know him pretty well. He does water changes on the fry's tanks and refills the tank water with airline tubing as to not disturb them as much. He has been doing it (breeding angels) for quite some time. He puts black pvc in the tanks so he can see the fungus eggs easier and pick them off. He usually has hundreds of fry at any given time, he bought an oscar to cull some of them since he has so many.

I am just worried about bioload with 12 of them, do you think thats too many for a 75?

No that's not too much. You might get a spike in ammonia when you first put them in, but if your tank is established well it will recover in only a couple of days.

You'll want to do weekly ammonia/nitrite/nitrate tests on the tank to ensure that the bioload doesn't grow too rapidly with the fishes growth - but it should be just fine, assuming you aren't stocking the tank with all kinds of other fish.

Plants can be a lifesaver in situations like that, if you've got the lighting then I'd suggest getting some low light plants like Vallisneria and Java Ferns.

Also - if the bioload starts to fall behind, just perform water changes twice a week - probably 20% at a time.

I am getting them from a local breeder, he's a big angel buff. He has probably been doing it for over 20 years and I think has 8 breeding pairs at the moment.


If you are ever in the midwest I am sure he would be more than happy to sell, but I don;t think he ships, I could ask him though when I pick these up.

I decided to do 8 instead of 12 dirtyblack socks. I figure If I have a pleco and maybe some clown loaches (especially when I am thinking growth) that will be more than enough. I recently had a tnak buster flowerhorn in the tank (2 year old) and with him I was doing bi-weekly water changes just to keep the nitrates at about 20 and I had a canister filter, power filter, and power sponge filter.

Hopefully these 8 angels wont be much dirtier than that.

Angelfish are WAY WAY WAAAAY less dirty then your average cichlid.

lol stress on the way, I guess they are much less dirty. Thank you, thats a blessing on my part. I might only have to do waterchanges once a week now.

well I live in the middle of america, so all the coasts (new york and cali) all get fish cheaper since thats where the planes usually land. When I went to florida the fish were generally half or less than what they are where I live.

I think I saw a huge beautiful oscar about 14 inches for 20 dollars in florida, and here that would have been 80.

Cheapest I can find a teacup stingray (reticulated ray) is 100 dollars while some are sold at wal marts in different parts of the country.

Some wal marts have discus as well. It all depends on the location.

Check out this angel...I haven't come across any of these with the blue cheeks, I guess you'd call them blue blushing? I don't know...is this a new strain?

I have seen a blue cheeked angel on this website once before. It was very blue when the light hit it just right.
