A lot of people keep them on sand. But feeding should be done in a separate enclosure to reduce impaction. Also keeping the veggies on a small plate in the sand helps as long as there is no sand in the food.

Mostly anything you want. Sand, bed a beast, cocosoft, wood shavings, etc. With some things, be careful about impaction

PS-Why couldnt this go in the other topi about beardies?

Baby beardeds are best kept on paper towel until they are about 5'6" not counting the tail, which won't be long if you feed them right.

Young ones tend to be very enthusiastic about eating and it is no advisable to keep them on a loose substrate like sand, coconut husk, wood chips, bark, etc until they've grown up a little bit.

And never, ever use crushed walnut for bearded dragons, or any other herp for that matter. No matter what substrate you use, your animal will injest some of it at some point in time and crushed walnut can kill. I worked at a pet store and a customer had a necropsy done to explain the sudden death of an otherwise healthy bearded dragon - what do you know - its intestined were lined with impacted bits of crushed walnut shell.

Looks like the typo-police got me!

For anyone lacking any common sense whatsoever, I meant five to six inches.
