Substrate would look good but will also increase tank maintenance. If you don't mind the extra work to keep the water quality right then go for substrate.

Cheers

What kinda pleco is that hiding in the back?

That's a lot of discus in there. Without any substrate, it's going to be difficult to keep the nitrate down. What's your WC schedule?

I think your tank looks fabulous, only thing I would recomend is reorganizing the plants with tallest in the middle and shorter on the sides. Keep the plants bunched towards the center of the tank though

Also, add a black background.

I would suggest planting some java moss on that wood.;)

btw. those glass "pot/containers" are a nice touch.

I like the discus you have a lot, but not *personally* a fan of the setup now. Obviously others are though :). If it were my tank I'd probably add a light coloured natural looking substrate, throw in some nice wood pieces, get a variety of ferns, swords and other leafy plants and a set up a moss carpet or two. IMO that is the best looking FW tank there is.. planted discus tank :).

If you are looking to do a planted discus tank, other then what you have. I would first do an established planted tank and then add your discus.

I can't remember what it's called--no it hasn't ever flowered in the 10 years I've had it.

The tall plants is a cryptocoryne.

Only thing I would recommend doing, is not following the above advice to add substrate. Adding it will decrease your water quality, and cause more problems. Adding some corydoras would help with cleaning up any food the discus miss, but will also add to your bioload. Personally, I'd leave it as is, and let them grow up.

Adding substrate will increase both nitrate and phosphate levels. BB will keep the parameters in better standings.

just leave it, it looks awesome

Exactly what I was about to say. Substrate does not aid in denitrification (not in fw anyway).

Barebottom is DEFINATELY the way to go with that many discus in order to keep on top of water quality.

Nice setup BTW :D

I would also leave it as bare bottom. Planted tanks and discus are not the best mix due to the different water each needs. I have seen some amayzing looking tanks though with live plants.

Great looking tank though, and you do seem to have a lot of discus in it. How many total and how big is the tank??

I do think there is alot of discus in there, and as for the other tank not looking natural ,bare glass is definitely not looking natural, i do agree that if you have substrate you need corys etc to help with the cleaning but please get some sand in there,

i know mine wont be to everyones taste but the discus have been living in it for years and are very happy and i think it looks great heres a pic or 5

cheers steve

Nice tank spwd but I like more wood & plants.

Tequila

For me the first tank just looks so bare or myabe better choice of words is unfinished. Because it has enough Discus in it. But without a background and no substrate, it seems unfinished.

The second tank pictured looks more pleasing for my taste because theres a substrate, making the tank look fuller, even the plants look fuller, yes I know the second tank is much smaller but it looks more complete even though it too doesn't seem to have a background. It still looks far more complete than the first.

But heck this is only my opion of what I like and look for in aquariums containing fish, when a tank has no substrate I expect to see turtles in it. I'm not sure why everyone has a problem with having a substrate. Shoot I presently use the substrate in my 180g tank as that tanks filter medium. :screwy:

If you are trying to grow out juveniles then you might want bb so its cleaner. If your discus aren't too small then you should be ok with either. If you have pigeon bloods then you might want to use a lighter color substrate and background to minimize the peppering (if you decide to go in that direction).
