Thanks. They are the red variant and they get big. The female gets at least 8" and the male gets at least 10". They are immature pair. The mature female usually have red that covers almost the entire body and mature male has metallic blue and red.

Salvini have always been one of my favorite cichlids, but I've never heard of them reaching lengths of over 6-7" Even males..soo..

Are you sure they're not a hybrid or something? Can't see the pics right now but will check tonight. can't wait to see:nilly:

Headrush,
they look to be 100% the real deal. I question the size thing also but hey I never say never. These are one of my most prized cichlids as well so I would love to see mine reach 10''. But since I have never had any make it past adolecence I will be eager to see if that size can be obtained this go around.

Agreed, I have lost all 3 of my juvies over the years as well. Beautiful fish especially the females. Full of attitude for a smaller cichlid too.

Like I said I would louve to see the pics but I have to wait til I get home.

Are they wild caught? That may have a lot to do with it

Good luck with them I hope they reach 10" cvause I've never seen one even close to it. Saw a 6" male once and stood there staring for 5 minutes

it was the biggest I've ever seen and it was a beautiful fish. I can only imagine a female that size

if you're a water change freak you'll get the most outta them that you can. Hope to see them as adults. Good luck!!

Do it Onion Do it now.... LOL. I personally love this fish for the colors and heart and attitude. But there on flaw is if they don't make a friend with a bigger cichlid the usulaly dealt a bad hand. There teeth get them into trouble everytime. I have been lucky enough that my Sal teamed up with my Texas who right now is the dominant fish in my 55g. So the Sal is on top of the world. But you can tell that not one fish in the tank want's to deal with those damn teeth. They just run. This is the fist time this has happened in 15yrs of trying to get a sutiable size Sal so I am very happy with the arrangement's.

The OP good luck with that Sal and hopefully they breed. I always wanted a full Sal. colony. That would be super bad like McLovin.

These don't seem like pure Salvini's, the huge amount of blue on a predominantly yellow fish and the extra size indicates they're a hybrid to me.

I'm just speaking from personal experience, and I've never seen a Salvini with so much blue. In the thread title you even say "not your ordinary ones". They certainly have a slightly altered physical appearance and grow larger than the standard Salvini that are available.

What research do you have to back up the fact that they aren't hybrids?

amazing sals! Mine is a real A-hole but he is in with some grow-outs...but still just about the meanest fish i've seen yet i can imagine they would just tear up anybody else in the tank if they start breeding.

A group of hobbyists from Socal went down to CA and collected the original pair. Many rare cichlids are not available in the US. For example, that Beani in my avatar was collected from Rio Presidio.

You did know that Cichlasoma is a slushpile genus that contains species that are either awaiting classification or have not yet been classified? Do some research before you call a fish a hybrid.

A slushpile reserved only for South American cichlids.
The Central American slushpile is exCichlasoma.

No I didn't actually, and I didn't mean any offense towards you or your fish with anything I said, they're stunning fish, though physically different to the Salvini I'm accustomed to over here in Australia.

Thanks for answering my questions and clearing it up.

I have 3 right now. They are I think a very under rated cichlid and a beautiful fish as well. All 3 are different colored. All are about 6 inches maybe a little more but not much. I always found them to be a little slow growing.

This one is in a 120 with my big jag. He has a in between color, gold/blue/tan.
http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/8527/mg3023rv1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

This one is in a 120 also, but sort of a semi aggressive community. He is quite similar to the first but if you saw them their is more difference than the pictures show. I rescued him from a filthy tank were he was bullied by bigger cichlids. He had HITH but is pretty well healed now. The first day he ran from everything. Their is a Chinese algae eater in the tank that likes to go after the other fish once in a while. He and a firemouth go at it like 2 cichlids would. The firemouth wins but the algae eater comes back for more. The first day he went after the salvin and the salvin ran. The third day I was watching when it happened. The salvin turned and split the algae eaters dorsal in 2 places and took a big patch of scales off of it. Now when the algae eater see's the salvin coming he runs and hides behind some drift wood.

This one is in a 55. He is pretty much yellow and my favorite color. The undesputed boss of the tank. He was 4 1/2 - 5 inches when these shots were taken.
