i think what happened was a drop in temp in the room we live 22 floors up and get a wind from lake ontario my wifey said she had the window open to air the place out ,ive noticed that this heater took a while to come on when i bumped the the setting to a higher temp, probably a bad probe
still they shouldnt break like that
maybe my wifes trying to off me
I don't like Visa-Therm heaters because two of them have broke in the past in my tanks. One was a 200 watt in a tank with tetras and barbs and the other was a 50 watt in a tank with killies, so I don't think the fish knocked them around.
Now I only use Ebo-Jagur and I have a Hydor inline on the 75 with an oscar and fire eel.

It wont shock you:) you might get a tickle, but the water is a lot more conductive than you or your fishies:D
Try Ebo-Jager heaters, I love these Ebo-Jager heaters... i use them for my tanks and never had any problems  . They have stronger and thicker glass, and they are also fully submersible!
I broke my own glass heater once ;_; needed it now I keep getting the same stupid heater from petsmart and it never works ARGH I take a new one back like every week =(

Ebos are good. I also like Tronics because you can easily buy heater guards for them.

I dont know what you are talking about. Current takes the path of least resistance, and that is not through your body. Even if you are tied directly to ground it would trip the breaker (or blow the fuse) before it would KILL someone.

Human, body is a better conductor than fresh water. It is your skin that usually offers a lot of resistance to electric current. But, if submerged in water this resistance is pretty much completely removed and the current chooses to run through the body. Many people have sustained injuries or died in accidents like that.
Breaker/fuses don't trip/blow fast enough. They are not designed to protect human live.
Special equipment exists for this purpose. A person can have a severe cramp, heart or respiratory problem or die before the circuit is broken.
Be sure before you post stuff like that!

Titanium are good but i don't have any problems with my glass fluval heater

Maybe because i work with electricity every day I failed to mention a few things (because i assume people know about grounding ect.) .....Shekes is failing to mention a few things too. There is more to it than shoving your hand in a tank that somehow can have current running through it. I'll stop now so i dont derail this thread any more. Sorry everone!

The titanium heaters have come down in price to the point where there about the same as a good glass one,My next heaters going to be metal

Ive been zapped from a broken heater before. its harmless unless you have a path for the juice to flow to(ie hand in tank other hand or foot grounded or touching metal or water.

I finally gave up on glass heaters after I shattered 2 in a row.
I was using them to heat the water in my water change buckets.
One time I put it back in the refilled bucket when it was hot and the
glass shattered, another time I left it in a half empty bucket and
enough water evaporated to leave it dry and it eventually shattered.
I think the titanium heaters are better for a number of reasons.
)- Either no relays, or relays that pass less current thus will last longer.
)- No glass to break and cut you.
)- External temperature adjustments and indicators
)- Automatically turn off if they get too hot ( left out of water ).
I'm convinced!

yes metal heaters and titanium are far better but the cost of a good high quality one with a reliable temp probe keeps people from buying them
generally a good quality glass heater will last for a long time if its alowed to adjust to the tanks temp and not used in a no water situation the heater in in my thread starter came with a package deal and i really did'nt trust it so i would advise people to buy the high end glass or dish out the dough for the best metal heater available at least it will not need to be replaced
i'm glad you posted your errors it good for inexperianced aquatist to understand the care needed in a heater particly the cheapo's

We've been using the Won Brothers titanium heaters and they've been working fine. The external temp. controller is too easy to turn so when the temp. is right I put a drop of hot glue against it so the cat or someone doesn't accidentally bump it up/down. Also some have a digital thermometer display and ours is accurate within 1 degree+/-. Ive had to many bad experiences w/glass heaters that decided to move up w/technology. A cheap guard can be made.

I don't know how to post links... yet. Just go to my ebey and start a new search for titanium heaters. The Won Brothers heaters are Pro Heat and Pro Heat II (the ones w/digital temp. display). There are lot's of reputable ebay stores there That sell aquarium and pond stuff, even Petsolutions!
Turtall, to post a link into yo message just click in the address bar so the url gets highlighted then right click same place and click on copy, then go back to your message and right click then click paste, that should do it.

Just make sure that you use some reinforcements on the glass heaters. If you have bigger fish, I've heard some success stories on Titanium Heaters. Again, I would place it in the middle or anywhere else but defintiely away from the corner. That was one of my first mistakes. I have a 40 G (which I will upgrade soon) which houses two 8.5" PACUS and an 11" Arowana. Inside is a 150W Glass Heater with extra reinforcements. No problem. Rule of thumb, if you cannot push it the heater with two fingers, it won't move.
