The Red Crab is by far the most obvious of the 14 species of land crabs found on Christmas Island. Millions of these bright red land crabs live in their preferred shady sites all over the island.

Bright red is the common colour but there are the occasional orange specimens and more rarely some purple animals.

They are a big crab. An adult body shell (or carapace) may measure up to 116mm across. The carapace is round shouldered and encloses their lungs and gills. Their claws are usually of equal size unless one is a regrowing claw. Males grow larger overall than females, while females have a much broader abdomen and usually have smaller claws than males. However young crabs all have the characteristic narrow abdomen of the male. The broader female abdomen only becomes apparent in the third year of growth.

Red Crabs grow slowly, reaching about 40mm in carapace width after 4-5 years. They are sexually mature at this age and begin to participate in the breeding migrations.

Think thats it seen them in shops in the UK

They might be what is known as the "moon crab" which I think is native to florida. They are land crabs, tho, and usually kept with less water. I'm not positive.

I doubt they are the Christmas Island crabs because I believe those are endangered.

Okay, I don't think it's called a moon crab. Here's a link to how to care for land crabs:

No no... its from the family Grapsidae...the most commonly imported member of this family is Sesarma bidens also known as "The Red Mangrove Crab"
It is one of 25 species from South-east Asia that all resemble each other. These Sesarma do not really live in fresh water, even though they do eventually march to fresh water from brackish areas and so cope well with fresh water aquarium conditions. If you want to keep them healthy, just add some salt to the water.
If you want more information look for the Aqualog book...

what kind of salt should i use

ChickenTeeth
12-21-2005, 1:25 AM
It should be brackish, and this is best achieved by adding abit of sea salt or Iodine free table salt.
It is also important that their home is well covered so that the necessary atmospheric humidity, more than 80%, can be maintained. The air must be constantly warm. Its temperature, (28 to 30 deg C) should be a little warmer than the water, (24 to 25 deg C) as otherwise the crabs may catch cold.
If you want a natural surrounding for a group of these crabs you should setup an aqua-terrarium. Not too shallow because you have to fill it up to a certain level with sand, so that the crabs can build their holes. A small water reservoir ( just a quarter of the availiable space) so that the crabs can breath without difficulty when they are in the water. You will then see how the "used" water is expelled via the mouth. At the same time, the crabs should be able to life their respiratory openings ( which are to be found at the insertions of the waliking-legs) above the water level.

I don't think so. Appearance – especially the dorsally-compressed ovoid composition of the cephalothorax and presence of both white and red morphotypes - is entirely consistent with that of a Neotropical Gecarcinid - see http://www.wirbellose.de/arten.cgi?action=show&artNo=115.

I have got them in my shop before under the name Patriot Crab. (Cardisoma Armatum) I think from Africa.

They are not fully aquatic so give them land. THe water you keep with them can be fresh or slightly brackish. THey are messy so be prepaired to clean the tank often. They are not picky eaters, will eat about anything offered. THy are pretty agressive too.

I am not aware of these being refered to as a mangrove crab. I have seen them sold under the name rainbow crab and sometimes moon crab. THe crab I am aware of that is sold under the name mangrove crab is definetly not what you have.

Great find you have there, neat crab.....

I think that they are the Geracarcinus ruricola, I have seen them every once in a while starting in 1974. A friend owned a few and they were very aggressive feeders. They would eat anything and since he was a sick bastard he would freak people out by feeding them live mice. This pic is by Chris Lukhaup. They are sometimes sold as halloween crabs, mangrove crabs, and even soldier crabs. I could be wrong though without the two side by side for comparison.

I wonder if these crabs are seasonal. I have notice many distributors have them right now for sale. They are calling them Halloween crabs, rainbow crabs & moon crabs. I'm pretty sure this is the same thing that I have bought as patriot crabs too...

Neat what ever they are....

I went and bought some baby red crabs to feed to my O's. My wife wasn't amused when I came home and yelled "HEY HONEY! I GOT CRABS!" Apparently she took it to mean that I was participating in some nefarious activities, not buying shelled creatures. She really needs to lighten up.

Some one already said it, they are Indo Land Crabs. They need more space as they are territorial and will fight. Best to keep two for a 30 gallon tank, unless you have MANY hiding spots. Keep it well humidified. Also, dont add brackish water if they were not originally kept in brack. Do it half and half and decide on one or the other. They need calcium so offer foods with that in from time to time. And feed every other day. I have kept many different inverts. They used to be my passion until cichlids came into my life.lol.

AWESOME! My local fish store got these in and are calling them "Holloween Land Crabs" and I've spent a few days trying to figure out exactly what they are..The attached images are what I used to know its them..

Anyone know a website where these can be ordered?

(Also odd, I looked them up on wikipedia and they don't have them..)
