you guys have no idea how much fun we had,, today was just awesome !! We caught a ton of gar at the aerojet,,(had to walk a mile to get to the spot),, on the saltwater side Ling, Li and Tim caught some barracudas,, we saw some peacocks on the f/w side but they weren't biting,, but we had a lot of luck on the tamiami trail,, lots of pbass,, some gar, tilapia and we hooked about 5 gators,, Li has some videos of them,,I didn't take my camera so I don't have any pics,, have to wait for Li to post them. It was nice meeting all you guys,, we should do this more often.

What an amazing weekend! This group is hardcore when it comes to fishing, we fish thru a thunderstorm! :headbang2

It was a pleasure to finally meet and got to know everyone a little better. I think I can speak for all of us that this trip was better than expected and we are planning for next year. I wish I can describe every detail up to the last minute of fishing and how exciting it was, but that could get us into some trouble. :grinno:

Oh Nish, thanks for everything, bro! You and your wife made us very welcome and are great people! Return that rental in one piece because "somebody is going to get in trouble."

Jason
05-23-2005, 7:08 PM
Wow i wish i would have found a spot with midas like that, all i caught was uro's and oscars. I'd be packing that florida green water snake for a nice trip back to michigan to spend a great deal of time eating anything its tiny heart wanted. Water snakes are the greatest, though they stink and have attitudes at times they are awesome predators.

Nish,

Thank you and your wife so much for the great hopitality. We coulnd't have made this a successful trip with out you. I hope ur arm isn't hurting much from hauling that container full of gar for a mile. :p

Marc & Jeff,

It was a pleasure meeting you guys in person, and thank you very much for showing us your awesome collection of fish.

Neal,

I know I've bugged u enough on this but how can you tell Monos from ocellaris apart again?

The Peacock bass in Fl were stocked there in 184 and 1987. 20,000 of them I read. My guess is that they are from Asian fish farm, and imported and released. not saying I am sure but they might be a cross between monos and ocellaris. Their color and patterns are very different from the ones I saw in the Peacockbass fishing video in the Amazon. We had a dicussion on this topic in the car after catching these guys.

What u think?

Yes jed, Both Monoculus and Ocellaris were reported to be released in flordia. Aswell as some Temensis. The temensis never made it because the Monos and Ocellaris mature faster and out competed them.

The fish you see in those Amazon fishing Videos are Large variants of Temensis.

Monos and Ocellaris crossbreed like crazy, so its safe to say the fish you are catching are hybrids of both species... Ocellaris are more "bullheaded" and have a cute little ocelli on the TOP of the third bar (closes black bar to the tail).

Monos have a more aerodynamic head and jaw with-out the ocelli... Monos generally also have more black on the belly where-as ocellaris generally will have a red eye (NOT blood eye, all peacocks can have a blood eye when pissed or breeding, but a solid red eye).

Speaking of blood eye. I was expecting to see blood eyes on these fish. but they had almost none. Only hint of red color in their eye was a slight hue of orange.

NOW what i read on floridas fishery web site while back said they tried releaseing all three types of peacocks in the canal.Problem was was that true they may mature faster. but the reason they stated tems didnt make it because they couldnt survive the temps. The other two could handle floridas winters in suthern portion but the tems couldnt take it it just got a bit to cold.

Yes, I have only seen it a few times in monos.

You mostly see it in Temensis, some Ocellaris, and Orinocensis.

It might be a gene "thing".

FL sometimes but rarely goes into the 40 and 30s. They report that even the other peacocks have been killed by winter but they seem to be more tolerant to the temps than temensis were.

Nish can vouche for this one. Josh told me he was freezing his ass off last time when it was like 43 degrees. LOL!

They should kill Monoculus and Ocellaris too. hmmm.

Also depending on the size of the Temensis, their ability to "settle" in before a dramatic cold spell came could have played a roll.

I would agree on that one too. But remember in 1984 and 1987. Temensis fry are not readily available. It's just now that even us hobbyist are seeing them.

So hopefully in the near future. we will se Temensis in FL.

so did you guys keep both of the pbass that were guarding fry?? That is a sure way to kill the numbers of peacock bass in southern Florida. The reason temensis weren't able to take hold in Florida is not because of temperature or monos and ocellaris outcompeting them. They take a lot longer to mature, like Neal said. People would catch them and keep them way before they had the chance to reproduce, and eventually killed off the entire population. The pbass are able to survive some of the colder weather because they live in the deep aquifers where the water can stay warmer.

Josh,
Did you guys hit any new places, or did you just stick with the Cutler, aerojet, and gunclub? We have been getting some spots from some locals on other fishing boards for next year. Just curious to see if you had hit any of them. Did you go into the Hialeah area or anywhere northwest of the normal spots?

Day 1 Part 1 - The Complete Midas Spot Gallery!! (http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/gallery/showgallery.php/cat/540)

As for the midas, let's not get it twisted... pbass did all the research to find out about the jigs, but it was my idea to put the worm on there and then Largemouth who actually made it happen.

Also, Jarrod, I don't think the pbass go down into the aquafier... I think the canals are just fed by it. So, what that does (for sure, at least) is keep the salinity in the canals low enough for the pbass to do their thing. It might also keep it warmer... but I doubt ground water is that warm. This stuff isn't coming up from the earth's core. I think it's just the sun and Miami's natural hotness that keeps the canals nice.

maybe they grow out of it...

I read on this site: http://aquat1.ifas.ufl.edu/mcfish5g.html

that the pbass were crossbred, within species, before release... maybe they meant they were interbred and the juvie specs are what remain of the temensis.

that said, I have heard from people I trust that the above site is not perfectly accurate. So, whatever.

i didnt have any luck on vibrex spinners either . i was useing the small mepps one . yellow was ones color other one was blue and bought a green one the green and yellow produced most the fish. i was even getting bites by the gars on them but the trebble hook wasnt big enuf to hook into the mouths of the gars. I cant wait to get down there this year. So was anyone throwing a throw net. any minnow traps get used. How many difrent peacocks did ya see at the airopjet it was freaking loaded near the over flow dam of it where the road ended. It's strange to see how small all the peacocks seem to be, have you guys not tried using bigger lures, when I go fishing in the Amazon I use floating lures with propellers, the more noise the better and you need to fish the lure right into the bank. Big peacocks will sit in shallow water with just inches covering them. If you don't get the lure right into the bank sometimes the fish won't bite.
Just a tip.

Like I said earlier. I tried my Rapalas and other bigger lures with no luck.

Let's see I had crank baits, surface lures, poppers, jointeds, sinking, mid water, husky jerks, vibrax spinners, frog lures, etc etc.
Only thing that worked was the jigs.

you are correct.

These are Monoculus/Ocellaris... COMPLETELY different from Temensis.

Monoculus/Ocellaris should rarely get up to 30 inches... ****, even 24 inches is amazing...

Temensis can easily attain 30+ inches.
