Coloration of the tail varies greatly from specimen to specimen, but also from dominance. For example, I bought 3 ATFs from the same batch one time. Two of them had lots of bright red. I added 3 more, and as the pecking order was established, there were only two who were dominant (one of them wasn't from the original 3), and they were the only ones with bright red lower loabs. The others faded considerably, turning more of a pink than red.
It varies from species (location) to species as well.
they have a magic trick.. if u put a black cloth over the tank and turn off the light the whole tail turns red. and once u take it off the red will gradually start fading away.:)

My ATF has a red tail and its brightly lit. The tail loses all red coloring if I keep the tank dark.....
