Sorry Bro, I don't think thats a Mbu!
It looks like you have yourself there a full-grown Green Spotted Puffer (T. Nigroviridis).. I am assuming he is in the 5-6" range? That is their maximum size, usually seldom seen! I dont think you will be needin that huge tank for him, as he won't get much bigger then that..

I've had a few puffers in my day.. Let me see if I can dig up the pics ;)
Heres some shots of him growing up.. The final photo is his new bare-bottom set-up which I enjoy cleaning now that he is dropping monster poops.. He has had tankmates since day 1, and the only casualty has been the trial and error with the polypterus and he ate 1 out of 5 of the XL tinfoil barbs that were schooling in with him.. Other then that, I have succesfully housed Severums, Tinfoil Barbs, African Cichlids, Pike Cichlids and a few other 'large bodied, semi-intelligent, fast moving fish' with him..

and the 'Crazy-8' puffer that I have had for a long while.. I only picked him up because of his 'different' pattern.. He is currently housed in a 29g with some South American puffers..

If i do get one i will be sure to provide a proper tank for such a beautiful and personable fish. If i get a solitary fish setup , i will settle for either a MBU or FAHAKA.

Hes like part of the family now, hes very cute and lets you know when hes happy, angry or hungry, which is 99.9% of the time!
Got myself two Asian Pygmy Puffers both about 8-9mm, I think they only get an inch max. I have never seen so much personality in such small fish. Im sure they recordnise me. They also chase my much larger dwarf cichlids around.
I've tried to take some pics but can't get my camera to focus on them.
I am now a Puffer fan :) Great fish.

Thanks! Would never fit in that shell now! He's grown quickly and apparently will get to be about 8 inches from what I understand. Know I'm going to have to upgrade his tank..... Oh, the pains of being a fish lover! Need more pics in my gallery but having problems at the moment..... Will update soon.

The last pics aren't mine but they are a Fahaka which gets to be about the size of a football. Prob want at least 120 gal for one. Been researching them myself! Awesome fish!!!! How big of a tank are you planning? There are lots of puffers. The one I have now gets to be 8" and others are smaller. What are you looking for?

I think I am going for a pair or 3 of figure 8 puffers to put in my 29gal. I am just wondering, do these guys ever blow up and expand? Can you trigger them to do it, or is it stressful on the fish, because it seems like it would be really cool to see them blow up.
Nice pics by the way, everyone!

Lol I only have 4 dwarfs right now. They are very cute but not a monster fish. I'll have a figure 8 by the end of the week, another smaller puffer but I don't have size for the bigger guys right now. In a few years when I can afford a big tank I'm going to get a mbu. Maybe before that I'll get a target, they're neat.
I'm sure you guys have cool puffers but I can't view pics yet.
click on images to enlarge, don't mind algea. I hadn't cleaned yet.

You do not want to make your puffer puff. They do this when they feel threatened or are hurt. I have heard that if they eat crustaceans they will puff to expell excess shell from their stomachs, but have never seen it. Also, if they puff and take in air it is very difficult for them to release it. Although it would be neat to see it is stressful for the fish. This is my opinion. I'm sure some people do purposely get theirs to puff but I prefer my little guy to be happy!!! :)

i almost set up a saltwater tank just to keep a porcupine. my wifes parents had a marine tank with puffer, triggers and some others. she said the puffer would greet her face to face any time she went by the tank. do freshwater/brackish puffers have huge personalities too?

Yes they do! A lot of them are very attentive while other traits vary with the different species such as aggression, burying in the sand and activity level. Mine is very attentive to me. When I'm in the room he knows exactly where I'm at but he isn't like a green spotted where he comes right up to the glass and does a happy dance..... Just not his style! He's more of a lurker. Scoots around the bottom of the tank as opposed to swimming around all the time. Here the Fahaka's have great personalities...... One day......
