Car wash sponge?

I just got a couple of sponges used to wash a car (dogbone shape) and i was wondering what everyone thought about using these as a prefilter on my wet dry...Could it cause any harm at all?? Thanks in advance :headbang2
 
I don't see why it would cause any harm. Unless it is treated with anything what is it made of?
 
if natural sea sponge then I see no problem , play with it soke up some water ring it out in a glass see what the water look's like and that my give some insite as to possible problem's ... :D good luck brotha! :thumbsup:

ps. did you get it from advance auto part's , was wondering if you were spoffing there slogan with your fair well if you understand me???
 
Its not a "natural" sponge but i dont think its treated with anything....Water is clear when i squeeze it into a tank.....and no it didnt come from advance auto lol!
 
Just put it in your filter, if all your fish die you'll know not to use it again......

I don't know if it's ok or not but I got two cheap ideas for you that are safe. THese ideas are for your drip tray, not your overflow box. The rolls of foam padding from a fabric store are pretty cheap and safe to use but a challenge to get real clean.

THere is also a Furnace filter pad I buy for pretty cheap that is cut to fit and completly safe. It's so cheap I just throw it away and replace it every couple weeks.

If your needing something to go in your pre-filter box I have cylinder shaped sponges for really cheap and have the DLS roll type pre filters too.
 
I dont have much of a prefilter at all in my overflow...just a strainer for the PVC that its tubed with. I'll try that padding from the fabric store..thats a good idea:)
 
THe 1" ID cylinder shaped sponges are designed to go over that core (screen) in your o/f box. THey are great for trapping large debris then your filter pad at your frip tray catches the smalled particles. Using a pre-filter sponge at your box will signifgantly extend how long you can go with out replacing / cleaning your drip tray pad. THese pre-filter sponges last for a few yeats too, just rince them regularly.
 
I dont have an overflow box though...its a plywood tank and the overflow looks like this:

How could i prefilter this setup? I've been wanting to for a while.
 
actually Ornatapinnis had a good idea use the sponge to make a biofilter for a couple of feeders and see what happens
 
I think it might be risky trying to do a prefilter on that type of drain. I had a tank set up like that and the problem I ran into was that the pre-filter sponges raised the water level in my tank very close to overflowing out of the tank.
