Watch some videos on youtube of geos and you'll see;) They gather substrate(sand or small gravel) in their mouth and sift through it for various types of food; spitting out anything that is not edible.

sigh i know... that's what you get when you are impulsive and sell off your entire collection... took me a good month or more to find them and they arrived in pretty poor shape and i had to nurse them back to health.
they did breed for me like 1-2 weeks after arrival though :D :D :D
as long as they are in the area and there is a breeding group, i'll be ok :)

Bad and good news. Lost my steindachneri as a result of unknown circumstances yesterday. Only a juvenile luckily, but he didn't eat that night and was 'lazing' around on the gravel, behavior I thought was rather normal as I've seen photos of numerous Red Humps doing it. That night he was hovering vertically at the surface and had no idea what was going on around him and had passed away by noon the next day.
Good news, picked up a new addition from a specific breeder.

Heckelii are very robust fish and seem quite aggressive, Altifrons gets chased here and there but it's nothing to worry about. Only issue in my display is my larger Severum is a glass banger and constantly picks on my other Severum but ignores my three Geos.
Hard to get good photos of Geophagus though in all seriousness, they're a fish that I have seen people avoid because a lot of photos make them out to be plain, and the juveniles also lack colour or flavour at that size, especially because they're in stores. Beautiful fish under the right lights, even my photos don't do them justice :)
Full tank shots for fun.

I've got to get some dithers or something with my redhead and uaru tank. Uarus chase the redheads and then the two large redheads chase the smaller one.
inhabitants are 2 Uaru A., 3 redheads, two debauwi cats, and one albino senegal. I hate danios and can't really think of another good dither that would look good and not get eaten by the senegal??? BTW the debauwis are being moved, there was three:grinno::grinno: senegal wanted dessert I guess

I've got several 'Yoyo Botia' Loaches with my Geos. I love them, they get about 3-4", look really good on light colored sand, and they are great at eating the left over food.
I'm gonna move the senegal soon, he is only 4" now. I really like the Congo Tetras but I'm really not sure about their behavior. I assume they do school when in groups? Problem is, around here the LFS charge like $15 a fish:screwy:. I'm making a wish list soon and I'll see if the vendors here can work their magic and get me some to go along with my order. I need dithers in two different tanks so $15 a pop will be too expensive.

there's another pair that formed in the tank. i had a spawning around last week but the fry didn't make it cuz i had an outbreak of ich, and i was more concerned with curing the tank. now the fish look a lot better.
the male of this pair is the same male as the last one who is going after the other female now.

I just sold my meridonalis a few weeks ago. I might be interested ub the rhabdotus if its the yellow kind. Definitely diggin the catalans. What size of tank are they on right now? I still have some balzani along with some geos. But I want to setup an unheated tank soon.
i have 8 that are 2.5-3.5" or so in an unheated 50 gallon low tech plant set up. they had some algae eating friends, three of whom died in the great ich war of april 2008... :(
i think i'm gonna get a siamese algae eater and be done with it...

They are very susceptible to ich somehow. I lost quite a few with ich and bloat problems.
hmmm never had bloat.
ich was my own fault for dropping in stuff that wasn't quarantined...

That third photo is a Blue Ram, Mikrogeophagus ramirezi. Regardless of the genus name characteristics, they aren't earth eaters, but beautiful fish none the less.
(Edit: Nevermind, just saw you weren't looking for the ID on that one. Still can't help you with the first Geo, I thought your other thread pretty much cleared that up though.)

Well that just goes hand in hand with my lfs I once thought was great is now only good. This is not the first mislabeling fish tag I have seen there, but the first for me personally. They do flash their black vertical bars a lot and that made me think jurupari along with the very red/blue caduals and anal fins, they also have a lot of blue spangling on their dorsals and on their trailers.

BTW the debauwis are being moved, there was three:grinno::grinno: senegal wanted dessert I guessGet some mascara barbs. Their color is spectacular on the adults.

Hi Jamie/Titansfever
For some reason I can only pull up my reoly to this as well as several other folks comments when I click to open the video.... but you did get some nice comments including mine.. Don't know if they can be moved here or not..
Anyhow...My sevs have selectively decided which plants bother them and left others alone.. it seems so far to be more a placement kind of thing than a plant type.. but they have only been in there for 3 months and were rescued as adults from a tank with only plastic ones.. The juvie rot sev has not bothered the plants at all. I'm sure everything will change when I get the geos tho...
When I emailed Jeff I just asked for shipping quote and said I was looking at Abalios or redhead Tapajos.. He didnot comment on the types of geos. His site lists Altifrons Tapajos.. are those different than yours?? N-E Cichlids also show geo redheads are they differnt also? Guess there are a lot more varieties than I thought. Better do a bit more reading before ordering alothough I'm sure I would like them all I really love your orange/red heads. What sort of pricing should I expect to pay?? Thanks Sue :D:D:D

SusieQ,
I don't know the correct scientific term, BUT, there are several "variants" if you will, of the Geophagus Altifrons. They are named after the original origin ex. Geophagus Altifrons "Tapajos" or Geophagus Altifrons "Trombetas" or Geophagus Altifrons "Manuas".
A Geophagus Altifrons "Tapajos" is NOT a Geophagus Oranghead "Tapajos"
There are only two types of Orangheads= "Tapajos" and "Araguaia" They are VERY similar in appearance!
There are a lot of Altifrons variants= They are just given the added name(Trombetas, Manuas, etc.) from which waterway they were captured from. 9 times out of 10, people selling altifrons will not know were they are originally from. I only buy Altifrons from people that have them shipped directly from the source to the US(wild caught). They do have markings to distinguish between their respected locale, but they are extremely hard to identify unless you know what to look for.
Sooooooo, to answer your question;):), Jeff Rapps has Geo. Altifrons "Tapajos" and NE Cichlids have Geo. Orangehead "Tapajos". A new vendor, SNOOKN21, has some right now, though he has them labeled as Redhead Altifrons(<~~~wrong). They appear to be Oranghead "Tapajos", I would need a clearer pic if I was to put a bet on it.

Hi there Jamie/Titansfever.. Thanks for the breakdown. Now I'm really confused..just kidding.. I understanding what you mean. As a matter of fact I have also emailed to Snook21 about the shipping charges. Please let me know after you see his pics of the actual fish if they are indeed Orangeheads.
I may just end up seeing what the lfs here can get me.. I know they can get Steni but not sure about any others. Since I don't know how long it's gonna be before we move to Ct. (now since the economy's downturn, we have to sell this house first), I might just start with those easily available to me and then when resettled go for the gusto...
Whatever they will be geos and I can experience them and see if they are gonna be as fun as I think.. They might just sway me from remaking this a discus tank in the future in Ct. You never know... certainly seems like they will require a bit less maintenance as well and that's always nice.
Any opinion as to the combo of geos with the ecocomplete in the tank??
Thanks again for all your help. I'm sure I'll be back for more LOL Sue:D:D:D

The Satanoperca are around 2-2.5" long. No idea what locality unfortunately as we don't get to see much information on the Wild Caughts that are often smuggled over here. I've had them for around a month and a half, and I'd estimate them to be about 4months old or so.

Certainly isn't. Was thinking off possibly adding some Valisneria and powering up all of my lights (I only ever run all 4 tubes for photos) so it covers the surface and is shady enough for the Eartheaters (they generally like it dark, the S. leucosticta particularly).

They're Geophagus sp. "Araguaia Orange Head".
Not cooking up anything, Growing out 7 Orange Heads for a final colony of 5 in my 5', and growing out 9 S. leucosticta for a colony for 5-6 in my 140G 4'.
Sold my A. heckelii colony because they're aggressive bastards and 4' isn't enough room for them, and selling my G. altifrons "Tocantins" because I'd like him to go into a colony because of his quality, but I can't make the room for one.
Going to do up a big tank update thread either a bit later, or tomorrow.

Darker substrates? The sand probably washes them out a bit. I thought mine was as long as yours but I was wrong, he's only slightly over 6". How old are your guys?
peathenster
03-30-2009, 11:50 PM
You are probably right - I have white substrate. Should try to mix some black sand in. Mine are about 7", pretty much the same size as yours.
darth pike
03-30-2009, 11:53 PM
Only some races have the red, most don't. Changing the substrate most likely won't add the red if the race doesn't have it. Leucostica is very varible depending on locaiton.

Off the topic - is there such a thing as a large, peaceful, and BLUE SA fish?
darth pike
03-31-2009, 12:19 AM
Caquetaia spectabilis would be the 'mellowest' larger blue SA. I'd keep them with heckelii and maybe altifrons, but not with Satanoperca species or smaller geo's.

just something i find very interesting about Satanoperca Jurupari, well couple months ago a lady was selling her Silver dollars well i jump on them and got 2 BIG ones, i then put them in my 125gal with my 2 satanoperca jurus and few hours later i saw no movement what so ever most of the geos thought the Silvers were piranhas and everytime the silvers would swim close to the geos they would go lay on the bottom and change coloration to the darkest coloration they have.
Well this was just something i wanted to share an dwanted to know if someone has ever experienced something like this with their fish.
this is a very nice thread and lets keep it rolling will add pictures of the Satanopercas tomorrow.
Best Regards
Juan

I haven't seen it in person, but it makes sense. Satanoperca pappaterra has been observed in the wild using one or two members of their group to watch the school of piranha ... hence why they are found in groups. A lookout while the others feed, switching out.

Quick question. I know having 3 geos is a bad mix incase the 2 pair up and gang up on the third, but what if you had 3 males? Would that be able to balance out or would it just result in even more aggression?

No cool down on Heckelli. They are said to be found in several amazon rivers but seem to be best known from the rio negro drainage. The most south that I know of is the north end of the rio tapajos. So they are definately completely tropical and would probably prefer water slightly warmer then a lot of aquarium fish. I keep most of my fish from this area at 81-84.

What are the species names of the fish in the post above? ^
Didn't realize I hadn't got to kick in pics of mine in yet. My 225 will be dedicated to the G. Abalios and Heckelii. I will be adding x3 more Abalios and x2 Heckelii to the 225g and moving the Mapiritensis to the 135g.
The 135g will be dedicated to red head Tapajo/S. Daemon and the S. Mapiritensis. Keep an eye on my sig for the tank build thread... :naughty:

:iagree: Very nice JK47!!!
I would be posting a lot more but my P & S camera sucks! It takes HD video but the actual pictures I take turn out horrible, could be me! I'll just try to get a vid and post an update on my collection. I've got some nice additions that should be shipped out sometime this week! I'll post a video once they settle in.
Any members got pics of some Retroculus?;):naughty:

I doubt we'd see them in an eartheater thread after that paper Kullander published yanking them from the Geophagine tribe due to DNA evidence.

Yeah, I'm still wondering about that one. They seem more Geophagine than Crenicichla lol. Retroculus have their own sub-family now right? Retroculinae?

Nope, baseline Cichlasomine according to the article summary, so closer to port cichlids than geo's ... still scratching my head about the pikes too *lol*

Wow, when was the Retroculus article published? Do you have it? I haven't looked for it, but will...

When I get back home, I'll fire the name/date of the Kullander article to you in PM. I am on vacation so don't have my usual references handy. I really want to read that article though. I mean I suppose I can accept bringing Guianacara back into the Geophagine family despite not having the classic Geophagine markers, but leaving out Retroculus is puzzling since they do have the classic Geophagine markers. I mean I understand the theory of convergant evolution but come on ... *l* I think DNA is going to royally FUBAR classic taxonomy.

Join his Yahoo group and keep tabs on it this week. Our German order should arrive Tuesday and then Mark should have his Belem list posted soon after that.

Are Orange Head Tapajos the same as Red Head Tapajos???
(Different stores using different names for same species???)
