View Full Version : P. schroderi - Flower Ray - Who has them?

Just trying to compile a list on here of who keeps this species. Please only add your name if you are willing to communicate with others about species. I do not think that many people keep this ray, I am confused as to why, I think that it is just because of Columbia's inability to ship healthy animals and practice good shipping methods. Quite a generalization, I know, but c'mon, I do not think that there is anything mysterious about the flower.

Currently I have 4. 14" Female & 8" Female both one year captives. Both acquired at around 4" disc size! One is a much better eater, will eat anything, the smaller is very picky and will only eat earth worms and live feeder fish (I rarely if ever use them). The larger is actually quite food aggressive as well. She will bite an 11" P. castexi when food is put in the tank. She tries to keep him from eating! Naturally I put in enough food for both and I spread it around, but she will stuff her mouth and continue to pounce on him and actually try to move him away from food! He has to grab food and "run" if he wants too eat! Anyone else experience this with a ray?

Other 2 I have had for 2 weeks, 4-5" discs, 1M & 1F. Only eating black worms, but as with all rays, they are still acclimating and will likely start taking different foods over the next month. These 2 are the result of importing 8 over the last 2 months. Yes, I lost 6 of them needlessly, due to poor shipping methods.

nice flower rays.... i used to keep them found it to be best for them to be kept solo with only there own species... i do plan to keep them again though... ive had tiger rays out compete motoros for food but all my previous flowers were very docile and shy...

Nice rays. I hope you have a really big tank planned for flower rays and a castexi... I think a lot of people don't keep flowers because they get big and flower rays along with tigers are known to be more sensitive than other rays. Usual flowers can not be kept with motoros or other similiar rays because the other rays will eat all of the food before the flowers can. If I ever set up a pond or something similar I would get a couple flower rays.

Why not? Aggressive? Not aggressive enough?

rk59

It is not aggressive enough compared with motoros or leos etc. I used to have both species which are more aggressive to get food.

I owned that ray for awhile too! You may have seen it when u came over Nic and I had it with 3 tiger 20-24" and 6 otorongos 16-24" and 2 other species of castexi all in one pond. You just need to spoil flowers. i have owned 4, never lost one and always had them with other rays

there is something so funny about how the guy on the left is so casually holding a dead ray that is 18" across. It's like he holding a piece of paper or something.

I won't keep different species together in one tank to avoid hybrids. The flower rays have a beautiful unique pattern which has to be kept pure and clear and not to be mixed with others.

A couple shots of my young ones, demonstrates how different their color can be as juveniles. These guys are about 4.5-5" disc size. They eat about an ounce or more of live black worms every day each. I am trying other foods, but they have not been interested yet. All in good time!

First captive bred flowers in the US? World?

I was wondering too if they could be incorprotated into a breeding program....., I know that it would be cool to try to keep the pattern and colors of this ray but breed it down in size for the home aquarium.... I know Miles is plannin on doing this with other rays....

So if they mature at sizes that can be handled in .., lets say a 8x4'.., then they could be breed with other rays around the same size... to try to start the process....

What does everybody think..... Mike??? Anybody thought about what ti would take......

Nic

i think somebody actually needs to breed flowers first before they can be made hybrids...

Bumping an old post for some more input.

I brought a total of 8 flowers in over 4 weeks ago, and of those only 3 remain (not all with me). One is eating very well (about 8"+) with another ray keeper, and I've managed to keep my two (4-5" and 8-9") alive this long. The smaller one is really beginning to attack chopped earthworms (and nothing else), while the larger one hasn't touched a thing since she came in. She's getting to the point of skin and bones, and it's really disheartening seeing such a beautiful ray whither away like she has.

A question to those with experience keeping flower rays: Have all yours been acclimated by someone else, or did you get them almost directly wild caught? And were they large or small when you got them? I had everything from about 4" to 8-10" come in, and size didn't seem to make much difference as to which survived.

They're such a beautiful ray, and I'd just about give up all my motoro's to have a tank full of flowers (yes, I understand how large they get and have full intentions/plans of meeting their needs), but so far at 2 out of 8 surviving captivity, the money is going to add up pretty quickly.

I've attached a pic of the larger flower when she came in over 4 weeks ago.

in asia, these are called Sakura Rays. The season is different from black rays.
Prices are about three times cheaper than black ray.
Very difficult to breed in captivity.

I imported mine myself directly from Colombia; the three that survived the first few weeks are still alive and doing excellent. I still have two, and the third has since changed hands to another MFK member. Still by far my favourite rays, and I'll hopefully be bringing in some more in the next month or so. I had no DOA either; it was just getting the rays to eat that seemed to be the largest problem with those who lost them (I was lucky and the two that I kept both survived).

Correction on the numbers Bro, ordered 20 pcs but only managed to get 15 pcs Shroederi and one piece Dumerilli (wrongly identified as Shroederi). Maybe because of my specification (14 - 16 cm only) had caused some difficulties for them to fulfill the numbers.
Generally I'm satisfied with the rays' size, health and the way they were individually packed (4 bags in a box) but for that Dumerilli... haizz

Next morning (day 1), some of them start taking chopped earthworms / live shrimps. On day 2 - 4, I just leave some live shrimps and small guppies for them. Today (day 5) I threw some Milli Worms (MW) and all of them rushed for it.

I'm a happy man.

Update of today on my three flowers. First pic shows my oldest female which is now 11.5" and the light coloured smaller female of 8". The darker ray is the same as in my post on the first page on this thread.
Second pic shows my 8" male. Third pic shows my second female again. The forth pics shows my 11" dark coloured female again.

In two week I will get my fourth one. :nilly:It is a female on 5.5" with a very nice flower pattern.

I noticed through the pics that mine are not the only ones with the white disc edge. I think the disc is just so thin at the edge that it looses color? IDK? I am just glad that it is not only mine that look that way.
