I know of what fish your talking about. Its a nice wolf, but i passed on it because the large head and large scales plus the vertical bar pattern on the lateral line point to Malabaricus only.
Sorry to break the news... :(
When there is no taxonomy or entrys on the net about these sp. it opens the door to speculation. And sometimes we are right and sometimes we are wrong. There is progress being made on some of the sp. of Hoplias however.
Keep us posted on this wolf
Dr. BROWN, B.Sc who is the owner of this pic ill post. Worked with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute on ecological correlates of cognition in populations of poeciliids in Panama. And in the field of work while in Panama conducting this research. Came across the Hoplias microlepis in these pools located at the lower reaches of these systems. Youll see this differant than malabaricus. Notice the small head, small scales, and no vertical bars on the lateral line. Ill post a link to a pic of another Micro that was caught in Panama.

I and lil neet asked Dr Culum Brown to comfirmed ID of the Ecuador wolf (lil neet posted one)
This is his answer
QUOTE
HI there,
I dare say it is microlepsis. Although the stripe doesnt
feature havily in the descriptions of this species, they
frequently have them. The dark mid-lateral stripe is quite
common in the wild especially prominant when the substrate
is lighter in colour.
These guys are quite wide-spread in Panama and Costa Rica,
Colombia and Equador.
I dont see the simliarities myself. But Dr Brown thinks its a micro then id go with that.

Hoplias are freshwater fish... Don't put salt in their tank ;)

so MANG, is the photo that aimara posted the fish you bought?
I had a wolf that looked similar to that, often very dark, if that's your fish I think it's a malabaricus.

well its not about the color. aimara and lil neet sent the picture of my wolf fish to a doctor and if you read above. he said that he believes my wolf is a microlepis. when i look at him. hes head is smaller and narrower from most wolves. hes lateral line only comes up when hes stressed and even then it isnt as straight as a malabarcus
