I was thinking back to when I began keeping fish and remembered a few terrible purchases that I made. This fish looked so cool and with out homework I ordered 4 of them thinking they are the best thing ever. WRONG!!!!! This is the worst deal I ever picked up. Known as the chaka chaka catfish. looks cool but does absolutely nothing. they just sit there. Lesson learned do your homework. :(

I bought an octopus. It did nothing but eat snails and hermit crabs and hide where I couldn't see it. I bought a baby bamboo shark without seeing it eat. Poor little guy never started to eat.

Hmmm... Mine would be when my boyfriend and I went to a Walmart/Kmart (can't remember which) and all of there fish were sick. There were 2 cute little (and I mean LITTLE) Oscars so we decided to "save them" from certain death. Still have them, and needless to say, they aren't very little anymore. Haven't "saved" anything since then!!!

Blue dempseys. 3 of them. I bought them because they look beautiful. Didn't know they didn't act like regular dempseys and get stressed very easily. All three croaked at 50 bucks a whack.

My worst has to be the Australian Arowana. I figures it would look cool to keep and silver and an australian together (like at the chinese food place by my house :D ) After thinking the whole thing out for a good 5 minutes, I figured hey I'm sure it won't make my life that much harder. The only problem was, was the size difference. The silver was ~6-7 inches and the australian ~3 inches, I figured they should be fine, and the aussie is just a baby so it will grow quick. Well moral of the story... Silver Arowanas are big, mean, hungry, nasty gluttons. But I still love him

Stupid Aussie cost me 30$ :(

MY WORST PURCHASE WAS A BLUE CRAY FISH, I DIDNT SEE IT FOR ABOUT 5 WEEKS AFTER I BOUGHT IT, I THOUGHT IT HAD BEEN EATEN, BECAUSE MY REED FISH, AN ORNATE AND SENEGALESE BIRCHIR HAD ALL BEEN KILLED,I THOUGHT I HAD A MYSTERY KILLER AND THEN ONE DAY OUT THE BLUE I SAW MY CRAY FISH APPEAR FROM UNDER A ROCK OVER 2 TIMES THE SIZE HE WAS WITH MASSIVE CLAWS ABOUT 7 INCHES LONG! I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND GETTING ONE IF YOU HAVE BOTTOM DWELLING FISH AS THEY SEEM TO GO FOR THE THROAT.

Mine would have to be Kribs, thinking 86 degree water would be good, and putting them in with a Spotted rafael catfish. The spotted rafael ate one of the kribs, the other died of the temperature to high.

My worst was a buffer fish. Which by the way I still have. I introduced the puffer to my elephant noise. I week latter the elephant noise was no where to be found. He had disappeared. I doubled checked the tank but still no luck. I made a special screen for the top part of the tank. I had heard of elephant noise get lonely and attempt to commit suicide by jumping out. I lost a elephant noise for a puffer. I think the bastard eat him. :swear:

01-12-2006, 2:59 PM
What are they dieing of? Also what are your ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH levels. Last is a question I have to ask, did you remember to dechlorinate the water?

TourniquetRules
01-14-2006, 3:14 AM
I did declorinate the water and when I add water when the level goes low I declorinate it before addition to the tank. The Ph lev is usually close to 6.5, Should it be closer to a balanced level of 7 or Is it better for my extreme mix of fish to have a higher accidity then 7? Honestly I'm a newbie at alot of this so I have no measurement tools for the first 3 of your level questions.

guppy
01-14-2006, 1:44 PM
Your ph is okay, and since you dechlor that is not it, I would advise getting the set to do the ammonia, etc, tests, if your filter is not established those levels can climb quickly and kill the fish. That so many hardy fish die off suddenly makes me think ammonia. They showed no symptoms?

My worst purchase was my RTC! Yes i love it and its beautiful, I knew they grew fast so i bought it at 2" when the rest of my fish were aroudn 5-6" Make a long story short, 2-3 months later, all the fish were gone in my tank cept for the redtail and oscar. It ate serously over $100 worth of fish. I still have the bastard, its in my 125 know with the big oscars and texas where it can't eat anything, and my 180 is back to normal : )

I'm torn.

The wild angels I bought when I was a kid - they lasted almost a week before I took them back. They didn't eat, wouldn't come out of the corner. I stipidly put them in a 20 low. They couldn't spread their fins fully. I was cruel.

Then the two albino oscars - back when they were new, at $60 each at just 1 1/2" TL. I bought them a month before I moved from California to DC. I'd also bought a 100 g for them! They went back along with the aquarium (to sell used) too. In partial defense, I didn't know I was moving when I bought them.

5" electric blue M. johanni $20. A local brought it in to the lfs. I was keeping M. auratus with convicts without problem, so i figured if they are so close a species to the auratus, this would just be like a bigger one. whatever i could do to talk mysel;f into buying him. He had a perfect balence of vibrant metalic royal blue and black, that didn't bleed into eachother. It shreaded the fins on my convicts to no end. I geuss it was just being an affricxan. wish i could have kept it

I've had two "worst" purchases.

1. A murray cod that I bought at 2". It did nothing but hid all day, and only came out to eat his tankmates when we weren't looking. Within 6 months, he was 15", and had demolished his way through over 1K worth of tankmates, including 2 leichardtis and a silver.

2. A 20" jardini. Didn't do my homework, so you can guess what happened. Went on a killing spree, in the process clearing the tank of a pair of much loved breeding dovii, a 12" blackbelt, 12" leporinus, oscar, synspilum and festae. Only surviving tankmate was a beaten up pleco

The worst purchase I've made has been very recently while ordering live plants from Singapore. After a rude email from the salesperson, they shipped more than a week later than promised, and finally....THE END UP GETTING CONFISCATED BY CUSTOMS in the US! The moral of the story is to not order outside US or buy the proper permits (I don't know how you would get the other seller to add them to the packaging and be sure it's done). Basically, pay the extra buck and ensure your shipment from quality US vendors.

my worst purchase was a green spotted puffer. I had it in the aquarium for about a week and everything seemed fine. Then i started noticing that some of the fish were missing eyes so one day i was watching the fish for like an hour and i saw the damn puffer bite the eye off one of my plecos. soon all 10 of my fish were dead and i ended up with one fish. It killed everything including an australian arowana. I had a separate tank with a huge pacu and i fed the puffer to it and the pacu ate it and almost immediately flipped over and floated to the bottom and the puffer swam out of its mouth. This was stupid but at the time i didn't know the puffer could do that.

My worst purchase was an african stonefish. When I first started out in africans I was ill advised by a petshop employee that a stonefish was a bottom feeder. I assumed it ate food that fell to the bottom. Unbeknownst to me at the time I happily brought it home and woke up the next morning to find half my africans missing. Thinking they got sucked up into the filter I solemly took it apart to find nothing. The stonefish had sucked up half of them during the night. Unbeknownst to him, he made a hasty retreat back to the lfs!!

It would be my O cause he is taking up to much space in my 75 gallon. I was wanting to put my fish in the 75 gallon, but I have a 10 gallon with german rams, angels, and a pleco. So I decided, I'd move them into the 75 gallon and put my festivums with them.

I admit that I've made a lot of bad purchases, but the one that really sticks out of my mind is a Tiger Oscar I bought. It just laid on it's side in the back corner. I thought it was dying. I didn't want to kill it so I thought I'd let it live out whatever life it had left in it. 6 months later and 5" bigger this guy is still doing what it did the first time it hit the tank. It liked to play dead apparently. I kept hearing how Oscars are personable and all that and here was mine...only acting normal in the dark and apparently acting normal before I purchased him. Pissed me off!

Mine was a school (4) of Silver Dollars that I was talked into getting by a friend. They were so nervous and flighty that they made my Oscars nervous wrecks!! And it took about 5 months for them to recover their confidence when I rehoused them in another tank. I've come to hate those fish, but my wife loves them............go figure

I've got 3 silver dollars and 2 Oscars in my tank. All of them are bigger than an outstretched palm size. They live quite happily together. However the silver dollars tend to avoid the oscars most of the time though......

I'm getting back into fish keeping and was setting up a nice comunity tank with 3 angles 2 dwarf gourami 3 diamond tetra and 3 rainbows in my 55g when wife stopped a lfs and brought home 3 baby green severums which are fast outgrowing other fish in tank :screwy: , also doing 50% water changes weekly. Now I need another tank to house the smaller fish before they become food. Hoping to keep 2 sevs and 3 angles and syno cat in 55 keeping fingers crossed.

It wasn't what I bought that was the mistake but rather where I bought. AquariumFish.net sold me 8 puffers and a pleco. All 8 puffers were dead within a week, my friend ordered fish from them to and had problems . I bought puffers from my local store and they are all fine, same tank, same water. The only answer I got was "Good Luck with another Vendor" from them. Had a good experience at RogersAquatics.com, also SharkAquarium.com the fish I received from them are all good.

I just bought a $3 baby green terror from either petco or petsmart, i forget which... and he'll probably be dead tomorrow because he was struggling today. I broke my own rule about not ever getting fish from either of those stores.

a lot of people on this site bash on chain petstores about having bad fish but everytime i read a story about it it begins with 'oh i saw this poor half dead fish so i decided to buy it...'

try buying the healthier fish guys and youll have better luck. even your lfs have die off so i dont get what the big deal is about buying from chain stores.

I did declorinate the water and when I add water when the level goes low I declorinate it before addition to the tank. The Ph lev is usually close to 6.5, Should it be closer to a balanced level of 7 or Is it better for my extreme mix of fish to have a higher accidity then 7? Honestly I'm a newbie at alot of this so I have no measurement tools for the first 3 of your level questions.

i know glass fish, violet gobies, and silver tip sharks (im guessing thats what you meant buy shark catfish) all like some salt in their tanks. even a more brackish tank than freshwater. even livebearers like it. try getting your salt levels higher. some petstores keep their salt levels between .20-.30 for their regular systems and even higher for tanks with these brackish fish. that might be the problem: dropping them into a tank with no salt...

my worst purchase was a large pleco. it was going good until i woke up the next morning and found that myh pacu had bitten its head off. the pleco was huge so that i thought my pacu wont mess with this. well i learned that if you have a monster in your tank no matter what u put in there, the monster will come out on top

Geeze I thought ohh cool, I never had one of those, Well put him in with a Arrowhead puffer / same size. Puffer takes big bite out of Chaca. I now decide I'll put him in my mixed tropical tank. Loaded with all nice fish 8 different rare plecos, 1 dat, jumbo glass cat, and many others. Well Chaca's give off a TOXIN when dying ( from bite ) All fish died over night in that tank!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Several hundred $$$ worth of fish! Here's pic of Chaca getting Aqclimated!

Buying my first oscar. I had already started a peaceful community tank with tiger barbs, pictus cats, cory's, all kinds of stuff and a buddy of mine says, hey why don't you get a oscar? They have great personality. I didn't know a thing about them at the time and didn't do my homework. I sure picked the right one alright, I bought a tiger oscar. The moment I put him in the tank, he swam right after the school of tiger barbs. In less than a week he slaughtered all of my fish. I don't know why but I kept him but he became my favorite fish. Now I don't even mess with peaceful fish anymore. Too skiddish and boring.

I named him Kurgan after the bad guy in the Highlander movie. When he was small he would only eat the heads off of the fish. He passed away a couple of days ago. I had him for 6 years. Don't ever keep a pair of convicts in the same tank with your prized fish. Mean little bastards. :swear:

Well if this includes supplies the wrost thing I ever bought was a glass pets mart heater, didnt work I exchanged and that one didnt work so it happen 3 times then I got my money back and got a titanium hater or something works great. As far as fish go the worst fish I ever bought was an australian raimbow fish..... not only was it mean as nutz but it was infested with ick. Never buy fish from walmart...check them first =)

Why do people even waste time @ walmart, pet mart, animart, i mean seriusly if they dont specailize in fish in my thoughts, its wasting your money...they are disesed fish, i shop @ three of my own LFS do the same, walmart is death

but for me my worst story, i bagged up one of my yellow labs adn gave it to my friend, anyways we were high, went out had a ciggrette and i told him that fish is in the bag dont freget it, well of course yoda fregot it, woke up in the morning and went into the kitchen the next thing i knew water all over i was like WTF, the cat got to the fish, i wanted to kill y oda so bad for that...

I've seen lots of people on this thread (and the board in general) s****ing on Petsmart. But I've bought a bunch of fish there and I never had any problems with sick fish; in fact most of the fish in the store look pretty healthy and the people who work their for the most part know really well what they're talking about. Even the cashiers know what they're talking about.
...maybe I've just got a really good Petsmart here.

But yeah never buy a fish from Walmart. I bought a firemouth there years ago and I had it until years ago minus a day. Walmart just makes me sad in every way.

My worst purchase was a Yellow Tang...believe it or not. It killed 350 wholesale dollars of marine fish which if I had bought at a petshop I whould have paid 700.00 for. I actually walked in on it doing its dastardly deed. The tang would swim up beside a fish and then erect its spines ( those little white lines at base of tail ) and slap them into the fishes body over and over again. He killed all the fish in the tank in 1 day while I was at work. Let me tell you...he went for a toilet ride.

i didn't purchase them but i decided to go to the local pond and catch some weekly stocked rainbow trout.
i kept 3 small ones about 4 inches each. threw them into my established fish tank.
the trout survived, ate, and bullied the other fish for about 2 weeks then all the rainbow trout croaked at the same time. after that all my fish started croaking. i think out of 30 fish only 15 survived. must have introduced some kind of weird parasite or disease into my tank. makes me think twice about eating stocked rainbows.

it was fun having trout in the tank though, even though it was tropical, lol.

About a month ago, I purchased 2 Tiger Shovelnose catfish at about 3-4 inches. I put them in the tank at around noon and later that night, I was looking with a flashlight and saw my Florida gar with a catfish in his mouth. I never saw him eat the other guy but they were both gone in the morning. I thought the catfish would hide and grow quickly so the gar couldn't eat them. He didn't eat a plecostomus that was just a little larger.

Mine are eels.. Fire, Tiretrack or Peacock. they will not live.. They are typically dead within 48 hours. Makes no sense to me as I don't have trouble with any other fish but I've bought a total 5 different eels and they all die. They even eat the same day I put them in the tank but when I wake up the next morning they are on their backs.. still trying to figure it out.

I would love to have a nice fire eel but it doesn't look like it's going to happen.

No doubt a 5'' RTC that cost me 45$(I just had to have one) ended eating 4 tankmates(2 5''TSNs,1 4'' Royal plec, and 1 5'' Lima shvl nose) on its way to 11'' in 3 months. Just ate and slept. Like a big black and white slug that would leave s#!ts (turds) the size of a cat dropping. I had a 15'' common plec in the same tank that hated the RTC so luckily it was kept in check till I rid myself of that pestilence. I dont know why stores sell them and I know now why hobbyists should not seek them(unless you got a 400+ gal tank or a pond)

he was tiny and a great deal, so i threw him into my community tank (29 gallon) with a small senegalus and my fav german blue rams, with the intention of moving him up when he got bigger. Found one of the rams with his head chopped off, figured out it was the albino, moved him into his own tank. I was planning on returning him to the store, only that I came home and found that he'd snuggled too close to the filter and gotten himself stuck and injured, and so he got a white eye and had a scar on one side. I was pissed, because now I couldn't return him. I fed him some feeder goldfishes, because at this point i didn't care, and then when I found him swimming around with a plant growing out of his top fin I was almost relieved that I had to kill him. Has anyone ever had a plant grow out of a fish that has eaten feeder goldfish? I at least learned the lesson from my worst purchase.

I think all my first fish choices were wrong :) We didn't do any research and listened to the Petstore guy. Well I think we picked all the fish that will outgrown our tank - bala sharks, clown loaches, 2 cat fishes, and 2 tinfoil barbs :) We did pick a small algae eater and some small tetras but now I'm faced with finding homes for some of the bigger guys - I can't believe how much they have already grown :)

My worst purchase was a Red Devil.......First because i knew alot about cichlids (or so i thought). This was when my 90 Gal had a bellycrawler pike, xingu 1 pike, and various severums and with this number of established fish i thought he wouldnt be dominant/predatory at all,as i have seen FULL GROWN RD's in Cichlid community tanks,so i gave that a shot.AS SOON AS I PUT HIM IN THE TANK he was punking all of the other fish off to the point that i had to return him.............i mean i gave it time to see if he would get passive and past dominence would re-establish,but nope................So the moral of this paragraph is,Do Not underestimate the tenacity or the ferociousness of the Red Devil, for these Parents of many a Hybrid will STAY king of the aquarium.

My worst purchase would have to be a Beta I got from Wal*Mart. I couldn't help myself, he was the only one there and he was in this little plastic cup and he didn't even have enough water to completely cover him, let alone move. I felt so bad for the poor guy that I had to buy him... even though he was really dull colored and his fins were ripped to shreds. I didn't even go to get fish, just look. Ended up leaving with something I thought would be dead in a few days.

On the plus side, he ended up lasting for 5 years and was the most beautiful shade of blue I'd ever seen.

Ive noticed a lot of the worst buys on this thread were cats of one kind or another...

My worst "buy" was two channels and a bullhead I put in my indoor pond this summer. I planned to let them stay there until spring but they grew so darn fast and got so aggressive I had to remove them last week. Now they are hogging a 55-gal all to themselves. Nitrites are so high even with frequent water changes its like they are swimming in their own piss. What a pain.

When I first got into aquariums and knew nothing. I went to Walmart and bought an Oscar for my 29g. It looked unlike any I had seen in pictures online so I thought I'd have something unique. I didn't realize that juvenile oscars are a different color than adults. Now, 3 years later, I have a 11" oscar in a 46 gallon bowfront. He is as lame as can be. Sits in the back all day and gets scared whenever I approach the tank. He used to eat right out of my hand but when I went to Iraq for a year, my mother took care of him and she somehow scared the sh%tp%ss out of him because he has never been the same. He also kills absolutely anything I put in the tank with him during the night. I thought it was because the 46g was too small so I moved him into a 125g and he still killed anything I put in there with the exception of tiny endlers that he didn't bother with. He's now back in the 46g and as lame as ever. I just can't bring myself to get rid of him though.

So many, in 33 years..A monstrous jaguar that didn't even reach the bottom of the tank because it was swallowed in one gulp by my RTC; a brackish moray that was in fw and stupidly I kept on delaying the conversion to brackish; some fish that jumped out ( wolf and several channas ), the list goes on...not the best equipment because of price and then .....

My worst and best purchuse would be the 3 oscars I bought for my 30gal high tank, with in 2 months I had to buy a 55gal, the LFS told me they wouldn't out grow it. I should have check, how hard is it to type Oscar into google. Well I went back and gave him a piece of my mind:swear:. So I bought a 220gal off my fav. fish store and am very happy so far but still I need a larger tank for them, 450gal should be suffient:naughty: even though they will be staying in the 220gal anyway.

My older bro bought me a freshwater puffer for my b-day, had to put it in a tank with some cons over night and would buy a 30gal in the morning, well I didn't buy a 30gal:(.

Worst Purchase: RED-TAILED CAT!!! Grew from cute little 4 inch fish to 18" monster by eating every other fish that would fit in its mouth. Finally found a fish store to take it, but they were not pleased.

Second worst: Pacus. Nice fish but you had better be prepared to have a huge tank. My outgrew a 135 (with ease) and ended up in an indoor pond at a business. They are now about 10 pounds each as far as I can tell.

I can't believe there is only ONE mention of the Butterkoferi in these 19 pages!!!

I bought a 6 incher one and put him my 125 that had an RTC that was 18", a true gourami (big), 3 snakeheads, and my old (13 years) 12" Oscar. That little MF'er lasted ONE day before I took him back. Absolutely relentless, fearless and vicious. Went after every fish INCLUDING the RTC.

Never again. Now I know why I have seen "No Returns" signs by their tanks.

Umm. the worst thing i bought was 4 dobosies for my milawie tank i had two one male and a female the male would "hide the female away" so i got 4 of what i thought was females, and the only wayyou can tell is the stripe on the head, strong stripe...male. Weak stripe...female.

Weel the existing male Autopmaticly started rocking the one new one untill it was dead in 5 min...I never seen a fish ram another one that hard before, i pulled the others out and put them in a 20gallon, they all died but my original female and i gave my male back...

I lost big time on that deal... at $80 a pop. that sucked.

Mine was a Royal Clown knife. Not they are bad or anything I have had thoughts of getting another one. It was a bad purchase because about 5 or 6 years ago I had bought a SA RTC before I knew anything about fish.

Long story short my RTC looked like it had a tongue sticking out for a few days. I took a pictures of it and gave one of the picture to the LFS. That picture is still hanging on their bulletin board of customer fish tanks, today.

A few years ago I had a small aquarium set up for my kids (probably around 15 gallons). After Freddy the goldfish went to the big aquarium in the sky my son saw some crayfish at the lfs (although, he called them "little lobsters") and well, we came home with 3.

Wish I had known that they tend to eat each other, my son got a real quick lesson on cannibalism :WHOA: and I ended up with 1 very large crayfish.

About 5 years ago and fresh into the hobby, i had a nice 29gal community tank with a school of 6 Ghost Cats, some black tetras, a common pleco, and a small raphael cat. Well one day i saw a koo looking fish, a senegal bichir. I immediatly bought one without any warning from the fish store owners. Well i put the bichir in and everything was koo. The next day i noticed that some ghost cats were missing. "Innocently" the bichir drifted from behind the tank with one of the ghosts in his mouth. I feel in love with the sight of predation. I watched him slowly stalk all the ghosts and tetras. I still have that same bichir and he still loves to eat!

Definitely Red Bellied Piranhas. Wussiest fish I've ever seen in my entire life. Actually had one knock himself unconscious three times just because someone walked in the room... Had to poke him a couple times till he snapped out of it. RBPs with concussions are kind of a site to behold. Their only saving grace was that they actively tried to eat my girlfriend. as said before, anyone walks into the room they freak, she walks into the room and they're at the glass, teeth bared, trying to get out of the tank and KILL her. it was amazing.

My worst fish purchase would have to be the powder blue dwarf gourami I got at petsmart. They developed strange buldges (internal parasites), white stringy feces, and while medicating I also found argulus or fish lice in my tank. Yes they all died. Now I had not gotten any fish from anywhere else in 1 & 1/2 years, so I seroiusly doubt it could have come from anywhere else. The employees only shruged their shoulders to this information and could not even consult me on medications.

Would have to agree with a TFD order. Spent almost 300 including shipping. Lost 2-temesis, 2-silvers, 1-royal pleco. All but 1-temesis was dead in a week and did not eat. The other temesis ate twice and died in 12 days. I checked water params. before putting them into tanks. Got them from the airport within an hour of being notified. Cleveland to Indy. Mixed my water with theres to get them acclimated. Made sure temp was correct and all tanks had been cycled. The biggest thing that pi**ed me off was the silvers. Got them on fri. and where dead sun. night. Talked with Joe and he said they had 150 5-6 inch silvers (that is what I ordered and they came in at 4inch.) and mine where the only ones that died. That is hard to believe with this size silver. Everything went down hill after giving good feedback. On the plus side is my 5inch clown. His bag leaked almost all the water out in shipping and was fouled by a big rosie he spit up. He looked terrible. Almost two months later he is about 9inch and eats like a horse.

when most of those died, I thought those little pacus where kinda cool, got 2, then saw my wifes friends' full grown oscars and got 4 of those and a jd, I still like oscars
the first 2 I ever bought ended up a pair, after I had some bigger tanks (got rid of the pacu after like 6 weeks skittish fast growing ugly bastards) got some (4)albino channel cats @2" in 5 months where like 15" got rid of 2@ 8-9"
I managed to find a purple oscar and I one day I hear a big splash and turned to see that one of the cats had power-rammed my superrare 6" purple oscar into the side of my tank killing him instantley, they were traded the next day for a re devil. after he terrorized my oscars, is when I started doing real research.(I did however read every peice of oscar info I could find when I first got them)

My worst purchase purchase was when i first started out with fishkeeping. I stupidly believed the petshop advice i was given back then, and when i got my first fish tank i got 3 chinese algae eaters and 3 mollys. Well the mollys were fine, but the Chinese algae eaters/CAE's fought like crazy (although back then, i didn't realise their territorial behavior was fighting), anyway, i ended up losing them when the tank broke and i put them in a big casserole dish with a filter which they jumped out of (didn't find the bodys into 6months later when i moved out of the place).

I repeated the same mistake though later on, as i still wasn't aware of how agressive these fish can become as they mature as my previous CAE's only lasted as juveniles (when they are not particularly agressive/territorial). When i moved placed and got a larger tank, i bought a golden CAE which i kept for much longer, however keeping it for longer meant that it grew and grew and become a lot more agressive than the 3 juvenile CAE's i had in the past.
This Golden CAE was a beautiful fish, but it became more and more territorial/agressive towards every fish in the tank until the point where i separated it and got it a tank of its own. Unfortunately though, the flat i was living in suffered a big powercut for long period of time and the CAE didn't make it.

I've learnt my lesson though, and i've never bought a CAE since. Also, i always do my own thorough research in fishkeeping now and have done for years now (particularly when it comes to buying fish) and do not rely on petshops for advice any longer.
I guess it was a classic newb mistake buying the CAE's all those years ago, however i did try to sort things out by providing the last CAE its own tank- its a shame it died in the end in the powercut as it was a beautiful fish, however i wouldn't buy one again in the forseeable future as i don't have the space anymore to dedicate a tank to a CAE again.

I would say that the CAE's were the only bad fish purchases i have ever made, i've made some fish purchases in the past with fish that grew too large for my tanks at the time, but i have always sorted the problem out myself by learning from my mistake and buying the fish the correct size tank and giving them the right habitat etc :) .

Buying Black Ghost knifes (2).
Back in the early days on the tank, had no hiding spots, except for the heater and behind a 2000l/ph internal filter. Few days later, 1 behind to filter had it guts and crap all through the cartidges.

The one behind the heater got owned. Belly up within 12 hours. Cooked itself.

Also another thing is when I had my tank in pristine condition, fish were all going great etc. Then what? A bunch of 5 livebearers come home from a family member thinking it would bring colour. Ill tell you what it brang, made me angry, I then decidied to limit thier rations, try and 'shorten thier life' or something. Dont like livebearers.

Some of those people that go to walmart have the internet, which enables them to.... Shop online!

mine wasnt a purchase. My dad's coworker was tearing down their tank, and needed to find a home for their large pacu and oscar. I volunteered to take them, knowing the sizes. But after having them in my tank less than two weeks they caused the death of my absoluet favorite fish of all time, ralphie my blue channel cat. He was about 18 inches. i am still very upset about this. Never get a pacu ever again
