View Full Version : Xanthic Jag carrier pair spawn
I got a pair of xanthic carriers from Bolty's xanthic jag. They were very ill but I sorted them out with some Amikacin injections. Shortly after completing the course of antibiotics here they are:

wow thats very cool.
i dont have a clue about breeding/gene pools really how do you know they are carrying the xanthic strain? will every spawn from the boltys xanthic carry the strain?
does this mean both fish have the strain upping the chance of xanthic?
im a bit confused

the xanthic is recessive (r) and normal jag is dominant (R)
and they carry both.
i believe these two to be (Rr) and that means half the fry could come out xanthic?
or a 4th depending on what the parents of these two were.

so in theory you should definately get some xanthic fry from this spawn is that right?
If xanthism in Jags is inherited like xanthism in humans (and indeed in convict cichlids) then both of these fish are carriers (ie their parents were xanthic x normal).
When crossed together they should produce 1/4 xanthic fry - though xanthism is often a trait that becomes apparrant later in life (ie when a few inches long) - so we shall see!!

cool well keep us posted i would love one of those xanthic jags.
cheers
The eggs have now hatched and the wrigglers are being moved into a pot (which is scarily close to the filter intake... lol) by the parents - they seem to be pretty attentive :)

Put a sponge filter over the intake tube so the fry can't be sucked up.

The xanthic jag carried the double recessive allele for xanthism, (xx). His mate was a wild type, so she would be homozygous (aka the same) dominant (XX). 100% of their offspring would then be heterozygous (aka different) for the xanthic trait (Xx) but appear wild type. Cross them (which has just happened) and you'll get a 3:1 ratio of wild type phenotype (what they look like) to xanthic phenotype.
The genotype (what the alleles are) on this spawn though is 1:2:1 with 25% being homozygous dominant (XX; wild type) 50% being heterozygous (Xx; xanthic carriers) and 25% being homozgyous recessive (xx; xanthic).
I love genetics. Best of luck growing the fry out. It would be a great accomplishment to introduce a new color morph to the hobby.

Indeed. Problem is you will only get 25% xanthic jags and the Xx and XX fish will be identical in appearance. However, if someone gets a male and female xanthic jag and breed them, 100% xanthic offspring is possible. I don't know how well this can be achieved cuz sometimes certain phenotypes are one sex because of sex-linked fatality and such. It will be interesting to see how this all comes out.
This is an excellent opportunity. Well done.

Or if you got an xanthic and crossed it with one of the heterozygous (best to use one of the breeders from this spawn, as you'd have a 50% chance with a blind pick from this spawn, or a 66% chance if you removed any xanthic fish) you'd get a 50/50 mix of xanthic and heterozygous.
Unfortunately none of the spawn made it to free-swimming - perished as wrigglers. They did not look to even be 'wriggling' very well to be honest - oh well we shall try again...

That sucks. Youll just have to keep tryin hopefully the next batch will make it.
no more trys from "THIS" pair as the male passed on :(
BUT! I did sell him 2 males bred from the Xanthic so he still has a chance.
It seems plenty of this spawn did make it to free-swimming in the end - the female is happily guarding them all and is thoroughly pissed off with the occupants of the tank that is next to hers...

Man we gotta see some pics.
The fry are doing very well. They are still with mum, but I am going to remove her very soon - she is extraordinarily aggressive at the moment - whenever I open the tank lid to feed the fry she jumps out of the water to bite me - ungrateful or what??...
I will post some pictures soon - I took a few 4 days ago and they have even grown since then!

NICE. look forward to the pics
Sorry i did not post any pictures - busy times lol!
The fry have now grown a lot. They are between 1 and 4 inches. I am considering selling some of them. PM me for more info (can post throughout UK) (1/4 of these fish should turn out to be xanthic probably around the 5-6 inch mark)
