if its any consolation -- they live wild here in the UK in most of the souths rivers and more than 200 ponds !! and you still can't buy or keep them at home without a licence (which the fishery department refuses to issue) ....

How do you have a lake? Aren't you like 14 or something? Not trying to be a prick or anything but does your property have the lakes on it? (big property)

they have two in Brighton aquarium in about a 10x8x6 the smaller one looks ok but the larger definatly needs to be in a bigger tank and they are really impresive to say the least
good ppoint wardie nice female firemouth
that tank is gigantis by are standards but should be considered a growout for this fish

35 quid is about what they cost about 10 years ago, well about that long ago, I remember seeing them in Swallows in Rayleigh, the guy was chucking in big lumps of coley, there was about 8 of them in a feeding frenzy. He was actually saying that they were about to be made illegal and that was the last bunch. Great fish but where would you put it, unless you have a koi style pond. \
Lopius,
What year did that law come in?

ritchie the restriction was passed in 1996 or 1997 (may have been a little more recently) I think - certainly a while back -- I had one for 8 years in a tank and kept it at 3ft, so not too difficult to keep really - that said I do have a 19x15 x 4 pond !

Got to keep them in a pond don’t even think about a tank don’t need heat. I have fished for them in the uk they tend to be around the 20-30 lb here but I know 2 lakes near me that they are 50lb the uk record was 62lb but since people were importing them illegally into the uk the record has been put on hold I know of 1 lake that has a 100lb in but I know for certain it’s a French fish the big ones rod caught come from Spain and France the record weighed 202 pounds. There is a rumour that in southern Russia. It may grow to 640 pounds. in the Russian lakes where the commercial trawling vessels cannot fish; the local anglers use baby pigs for bait. No record is listed. Here is me with a modest 25lb er even at that size it would need a huge tank and they grow fast a friend of mine got a small one and had it in a holding tank with some Orfe it ate all the Orfe and grew to 10lb within two years. The amount these fish can eat I caught this one on ½ a tin of canned meat that’s a bate about 4” cubed. This fish sells for a very high price (GBP25 per lb for a single figure fish rising to GBP40 per lb for a 30lb fish). It is illegal to import catfish into this country, except for the aquarium trade, or for use as brood fish.
