I'm not technically an Eel keeper, but this one just happens to live in the stream at the bottom of my garden. We feed it chicken and fish scraps and it has become fairly tame over the years.
http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=39925&size=1
It's a NZ longfinned Eel, (Anquilla dieffenbachii). They can grow to 2m long a weigh 40kg, so this is just a small one - about 90cm long.
http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=39927&size=1
I lured it out with some pieces of fish to take the pictures.
http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=39926&size=1
Then it wriggled back to it's cave.

Ian - Thats the coolest thing ive ever seen as part of anybodys garden!!!
How long have you guys been feeding it?
How long have you guys been feeding it?
I've only lived here about 4 years. Next door neighbour has been feeding them for years. Not sure if it's the same eel, sometimes other ones appear at feeding time. This one is probably 20-30 years old though.

About the same as people leaving the bar at closing time. Little confused kinda bump into things. Usually get eaten within a few minutes. Don't really know beyond that.
The Fimbriated Moray (named Adolf) gets goldfish every so often as a treat. This pic was taken a few months after I got it. Much larger now as that was probobly around 1.5-2 years ago. Hit a big growth spurt after I found smelt at a grocery store. Unfortunatly I went back to get more and was informed that it was sent there by accident and they can no longer get it. Wish I would have taken some smelt feeding pics. The eel would dart straight from the rocks to the surface and his head would come out of the water a few inches usually hitting the tops. The thing is nuts. Was feeding him by hand for a little while but after it started breaking the surface I figured it would be a good idea to go back to using a skewer. It was up to 2 uncut pieces of smelt a day and the pieces were about 6 inches.

A question for those of you whose fire eels are very red. What and how often do you feed them especially the eels over 12". Mine is about 7-8 now and will eat bloodworms and earthworms and feeder guppies

My new fire eel. She's maybe 8 inches? Sorry they are a little blurry... hard to get a whole shot of her sitting still. Also... she is more brown than the ones I see on here, is that just because she is young? Most of the ones I see are more black/blueish with a LOT more yellow and red. Can I look forward to her looking that way as she matures?
Haha... I just noticed my bamboo shrimp chillin' in the background!

Great Eels!! I really enjoyed browsing through this thread. My favorite fish is my eel. I really enjoy this guy, and have only had positive experiences with my fire eel. They have so much personality, and is fairly tough against the parrots and one flowerhorn in the tank the eel is in. I hand feed my fire eel bloodworms. He is a picky eater, so that is all i know the eel eats. It might eat other food when it is nighttime and the tank is dark. I am not sure how long the eel is now, but I would guess from 20 inches.
Early, younger photo of me feeding my eel.

The retailer sold it to me as a "flowerhorn parrot". I am guessing it is a veija X parrot. I could be wrong. That parrot fish is cool, too. The eel is watching the parrot. :)

It has a mouth of a king kong parrot, the body of a regular blood parrot, but the colors are of a "stereotypical" flowerhorn (with the flowerline and bright colors), but obviously no pearling. I will never know the entire make-up of this fish, since I bought them in malaysia. FYI, it is not dyed. I love this parrot anyway, no matter what it is. Half of my fish now have been sold to me as something other than what I was told they were, but they all turned out to be better than anything I could have expected.:irked: :)

Brackishdude, how long did it take your fire eel to grow that big?
About 6-7yrs, when I got him he was about pencil size. I was a student then, with more time than brains/money, so the tank got a lot more attnetion, including frequent trips to the compost pile for worms. He ate well.
I imagine it would take much longer with more reserved feedings.

Can you put Fire eels with any kind of fish ?
As long as there to big to fit in the eels mouth it should be fine. They do get very large and are a rather aggressive eater. Also I wouldn't put them in with some of the really aggressive or nippy chichlids. Hope this helps.
Good luck.

WOW! a 48"+ zebra eel. That is a beast. We need to see pictures of that thing. I dunno mine eats anything I put in front of its face. Do you target feed with a feeding stick? How long have you had the eel? What have you fed it and how have you fed it in the past? Foods soaked in garlic extract usually will help to get a fish eating. Try large krill soaked in garlic. That is how I started mine started. Is it starting to look thin yet?

Yes....it looks thin. I aquired it 6 weeks ago from a guy in Chicago. Has never eaten for me.... He said crab and shrimp. I've tried everything. Will get garlic tonight.
Believe me it's over 48in. I only know this cause I taped it in disbelief of the size when I got it home. I will have pics up as soon as I can get them dumped.
Yes....all eels are target fed. There's 2 volitans in my eel tank..the rest is eels.
Think it's possible the Zebra isn't eating due to intimidation? Like maybe a really thick 2'+ Fimbriated? I don't know what else it could be.....all other eels started eating the day after I got them. I would think if any eel should be intimidated it would be the foot long snowflake that eats like a horse....not the tank monster.

here's my 7 incher, he eats very well, i always feed my other fish when i put in a new fish to distract him, and while he was still in the bag I put some bloodworms in the tank, let him in the tank and he didn't even make it to the bottom before he turned around and went straight for the worms. (and that was after floating in the bag for and hour and a half because the store kept him in brackish, so i had to transfer to fresh slowly)

the pointy noses are spiny ells i'm pretty sure thats what your talking about
the other eel is most likely whats sold as a freshwater moray eel or a snowflake eel they need alot of salt in there water there high end brackish fish so they need about 1/2 to 3/4 salt water
