View Full Version : Best Parachromis Motaguense Competition
darthodo

Okay. This is the first attempt at a species specific competition. This is not meant to be a photo contest, but good photos do help with the voting. No more than three pictures of the species selected for competition will be posted by each member in the photo thread. Really don't need many comments here, just pictures unless owners want to tell how big the fish is, how old it is, and where it came from. This thread will go for one week and will stop this time next week. Then a poll will be started and will be linked to the photo thread. Then vote for your favorite of the species. Remember, this is not whose photo is the best, but which specimen you think is best. If someone comes up with ideas for prizes or recognition, please feel free to discuss them in a different thread. This is the beginning of the motaguense competition, be it red tiger or normal morph. Post away!

Of the five Parachromis species, I've got five big ones and one teeny tiny one making up 4 of the five species (see sig). And you would pick the one I just finally added after a year of looking. And she's only 2 1/2" long.:D
Oh well, here's mine. She'll be a winner in six months.

Great folks. Keep em coming!
Very nice fish everyone. Are there really only 5 Parachromis species? Surely there are others that just aren't as common?
Dovii, managuense, loiselle, mota, and freddy are the only ones I know about though.

That's it. There is the grammodes (Cichlasoma, I think) that is also known as the mini guapote or mini dovii, but it is not Parachromis. It sure does look llike a mini dovii.
And, Aquamojo for the win. Game over.:D:eek::drool::WHOA:

The gold are different than the "regular". The gold I believe are a yellow color morph while the "red tiger" are a regional variant with more red (obviously). The ones I owned were neither of those, just the wild type morph.

Pretty sure he's using a top of the tank mounted remote flash & very small aperture setting (f/22?). Top mounted flash penetrates the water differently than doing it from a camera mounted flash. Less light will be going directly to the background. Using the small aperture (and the camera metering) will also let in much less ambient light.
And yeah, Mo does seem to have some competition, but I think just the size of his fish would put him over the top!
Pingpong & polomax, what sizes are your fish? Very nice.
Here's my ~5" female:

im gonna give up!!! my whole family is standing here and cant figure this out ha..ha. really does anyone now how to post a pic.
Here's what I do.
Go to www.photobucket.com
Upload the photo you want shown.
Once it's been uploaded click the IMG code like shown.
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r265/Haole_Built/asdfsadfsdf.jpg
Paste it in the text window on MFK. I like to use CTRL+C to copy and CTRL+V to paste
http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r265/Haole_Built/Picture300.jpg
Or you could have a photo that's already been uploaded and right click on it, select properties, and highlight the image URL. Then paste it between the IMG tags like so. (Using [] instead of {}.)
{IMG}http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r265/Haole_Built/Picture300.jpg{/IMG}
I greatly dislike the MFK watermark on my photos so I avoid attaching them directly from the forum.

What's up guys? I am new to this forum, but I have owned fish for years. I used to be in love with Managuense, but got introduced to Motaguense.
They are very cool and I have managed to pair breeders. They are still only 4" or so and are in a 55 gallon that they will quickly outgrow.
My question is when do I need to take the fry out? I know at a certain point they will become food. What should I do with them? I count about 150 or so.
Should I set them up in say a 20 gallon or maybe bigger?

Seriously, that's the most intense red that I've ever seen on a female mota. Got any little girls to sell? :naughty: Little girl offspring of that fish, that is.
Need one for this guy. The dominant offspring from a batch of 6 motas that House sent me, guess who his daddy is? (Sorry for the subpar pics.)

It's a possibility. The LFS I got her gets fish from Jeff from time to time. I can't say for certain though. It wouldn't surprise me as nice as she is.:)

The female is looking at the gravel to see one of the fry that wandered away from the cloud. The greavel is piled against the glass. She apparently thinks one of the fry are stuck between glass and gravel.

You tend to forget how it all starts. Here's the fry that momma saw. It amazes me that this little silver fleck might someday look as good as the adult.

As luck would have it I do have some of their fry now...and a new batch just the other day.
It's a Nikon D300. The camera is only PART of the end result. Having a camera in hand for 35 years might help a bit.:D
That's a good looking fish. Great condition and color.
And another! No need to apologize for that photo, pal.

Just stumbled upon this thread. As a matter of fact, I saved a large batch of fry from this particular pair. They should be large enough to pass along in a month. Anyone going to the convention?
