Great! Did you create a stock list?

yup, got 9 burundi fronts. when they get big enough to vent ill break the group down to 1 male and 4 females if what i got now allows me to. 2 boulengerochromis microlepis which ill growout and donate to a local aquarium or rehome to a tank big enough to house for the rest of their lives. im going to add 1 or 2 lepidolamprologus kendalli, 1 or 2 lamprologus lemairii. 2 or 3 neolamprologus tetracanthus and 2 lepidolamprologus cunnuntoni. and that should do it.

Sounds good to me. One thing I would do is add a few more fronts if you want to end up with 4 females. If you end up with more than 4 females you can trade them on MFK and get a lot in return for them. :headbang2

Can't wait to see your tank progress!

good afternoon my fellow tanganyikans! sure is a hot one in cali today! anyways i got back from my lfs, homedepot, and pool supply spot and got all that i need to get this tanganyikan tank up and runnin. i was gonna hit up my local rock spot but i figure ill do it another day! so lets go on with this thread! here are the parts that ill be using...

(2) 1 and 1/2 inch returns. the centers can be pointed which ever way i like....
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k16/steadywestcoastin/Picture107.jpg

1 and 1/2 inch intake with strainer...
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k16/steadywestcoastin/Picture106.jpg

(3) 1 and 1/2 to 1 inch reducers...
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k16/steadywestcoastin/Picture109.jpg

(2) 1 inch barbed fittings and a 1 inch "T"...
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k16/steadywestcoastin/Picture110.jpg

1 and 1/4 inch vinyl tube at 2 ft. with 4 stainless steel clamps...
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k16/steadywestcoastin/Picture108.jpg

(2) 1 inch threaded to slip coupling with some plumbers glue...
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k16/steadywestcoastin/Picture112.jpg

(3) 50lb. bags of 20 grade pool filter sand...
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k16/steadywestcoastin/Picture120.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k16/steadywestcoastin/Picture121.jpg

hacksaw and mitre box. to cut the 2 1 inch x 10ft pvc pipes...
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k16/steadywestcoastin/Picture122-1.jpg

the final piece that makes this system work. some may say its not enough filtration but i fell itll work just fine along with my weekly water changes and my bi-weekly vacuums...
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k16/steadywestcoastin/Picture123-1.jpg

and daddys little helper. star, my rat terrier. shell be a year next month!...
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k16/steadywestcoastin/Picture118.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k16/steadywestcoastin/Picture119.jpg

now im gonna go put in work! :headbang2 ill check in later! deuce!

addicted2cichlids
04-26-2008, 11:49 PM
alright so i got all the plumbing setup now...

i replaced the stock hose (the hose that comes with the unit) with this vinyl tube cut into 2 1 footers.
i clamped both ends of the vinyl tube. the pic only shows the bottom part.
it was kind of tough gettin those barbed fittings all the way in...
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k16/steadywestcoastin/Picture127.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k16/steadywestcoastin/Picture128.jpg

i directed one bulkhead at a downward slant and the other bulkhead at a upward slant all toward the intake.
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k16/steadywestcoastin/Picture129.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k16/steadywestcoastin/Picture133.jpg

heres the intake strainer. i wanted a flush mount but couldnt find one and the only option was to special order but then i thought that this would be a better decision since you can say it "grabs" more debris and water.
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k16/steadywestcoastin/Picture130.jpg

i bought 2 1 inch x 10ft. pvc pipes just in case but only needed 1 and heres the outcome of my "closed loop system"...
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k16/steadywestcoastin/Picture136.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k16/steadywestcoastin/Picture140.jpg
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k16/steadywestcoastin/Picture138.jpg

stay tuned cuz i still gotta add water, sand, rocks, and of course my tangs!:headbang2 thanks for all the comments! others dont understand and call me crazy but it feels great to come to a spot where others like myself share the love for africans!... africa bambata and the soooouuuul sonic force! just thought id bring it back to the electric funk and freestyle days! hahahahah!

at homedepot it came out to $38.98 with the items i needed i also got a tape measure too.
at my lfs the strainer was $4.99 + tax. the pool filter sand came out to $30 and some change.
dont know if this helps!

so late into the morning i decided to start on the pool filter sand. for those who havent done the sand cleaning thing before it might seem like a hassle and never ending. well instead of filling the bucket all the way up with pool filter sand and cleaning it try doing 1 3rd of the bag or even break it down to 1 4th of the bag. youll see its really quick to clean. this is just one bag before i decided to call it a night. ill get the 2 other bags of pool filter sand in today.

well its rated at 563 g/h without media (weird huh). i have bio-max in all 3 trays but i dont think its much less from 563 g/h. the pump output is 925 g/h...

so i got the 3rd bag of pool filter sand in. water conditioned and i got the canister running too. still kind of cloudy. the sand just has to settle and then i can even out the sand. the sand is 1 1/2-2" deep. gotta give the tangs some play! i still gotta mount my visi-therm stealth heaters and get more lava rocks and put them in. this week im gonna start the cycle with some bb from my other tank and lots of gold fish and possibly cycle for 2-3 weeks just to be safe.

Just an idea, it might be better to turn the filter off and do water changes to remove the cloudiness. The sand grit can wear down your impeller and create a lot of noise.

You can even plumb the lower bulkhead to drain the cloudy water and connect another hose from the tap to one of the return bulkheads. :headbang2

When the water is clear, reconnect your (cleaned) fx5. Add water conditioner, turn the canister filter on.

not that i dont mind your recommendations but bacteria in a bottle sounds like a scam (you tryin to steal my money! damn you aquatic! jk). why not just overdose the tank :headbang2and add your own bb from current tanks. thats what i did. i just threw in my crayfish and hybrid yellowlab/zebra in last night and theyre fine. but for lights just straight flourescent bulbs, hagen sun-glo. i borrowed the light from my other tank to take a pic. im not sure if i want to use the 2 light fixtures that came with the tank for a lit up/bright look or 1 light fixture where it lights up the middle and the sides are dark. im leanin towards the 1 light fixture in the middle for a settle look. well see....

I generally take a new filter that is going on the new tank and put it on an established tank for a week or two. Then I set up the new tank I take water out of an established tank and fill it at least half way. Fill it the rest with treated tap water, throw on the filter, and instant cycled tank....

NewETown
04-30-2008, 10:45 PM
That's exactly what I do fanatic, and i can throw fish (hardy ones at least) into a tank that's 3-4 days old. The only caution I'd take when doing that is if you have a problem with parasites or something in the tank you're using.

Sic_Maggot13

yup, got 9 burundi fronts. when they get big enough to vent ill break the group down to 1 male and 4 females if what i got now allows me to. 2 boulengerochromis microlepis which ill growout and donate to a local aquarium or rehome to a tank big enough to house for the rest of their lives. im going to add 1 or 2 lepidolamprologus kendalli, 1 or 2 lamprologus lemairii. 2 or 3 neolamprologus tetracanthus and 2 lepidolamprologus cunnuntoni. and that should do it.

alright, so i ordered some of my stocklist and offlist the other day and today i go to follow up with the order thats being shipped tomorrow to my airport.... i ordered 2 lepidiolamprologus kendalli (nkambae bay) , 4 lamprologus lemairii, 3 neolamprologus tetracanthus, 3 sexfasciatus golds, 3 julidochromis dickfeldi, 1 golden nugget, and 1 king tiger pleco... i call the vendor up and he goes i was about to call you! i have some bad news! the lemairii and tetracanthus have all died! (im like wtf in my head) i say  are you serious. he goes yeah and its weird cuz they were housed with other fish and theyre still alive! i call BS. anyways he goes on to say that he'd recommend i just replace them with some king tiger plecos because i originally wanted 3 and when i did the order he told me he only had 1 king tiger pleco and that he just noticed he had more than 1 now. doesnt this sound like BS. how do you not know your own stock:irked: moving along, so im bummed cuz i wanted the lemairii's due to their rarety in the hobby and the tetracanthus... so i ended up with 3 kendalli, 3 sexfasciatus golds, and 3 dickfeldi along with the golden nugget and king tiger. still kind of bummed cuz i was looking forward to the ones that MYSTERIOUSLY DIED!

anyways, for those who have been following/reading each post then you know that when i ordered these fish the vendor told me that the lemairii and tetracanthus all died after i ordered for unknown reasons! so heres the actual invoice of what i ended up with...

its either malachite green or this other stuff i forgot the name at the moment. but what it does is makes the fishs get oxygen all the time while being shipped, kinda forces them too. but the fish look nice! i bet it looks so funny with those tiny fish in there, mine does...only like 8 fish in there right now and it looks naked.

mike dunagan

yes the blue stuff helps keep the fish claim so they do not use too much oxygen. When I go to auctions fish will be in bag for the entire day until late that night, and I have yet to lose one in the blue water.

I have been burned by shippers before, so when a fish dies and then they have ones they said they didn't I fear is all. Glad to see they made it okay

ethnics
05-03-2008, 6:40 PM
yah the blue water is always used when fish are shipped. keeps them calm, cuz when they stress they use more oxygen. and that bag doesn't have enough as it is. some fish stores even use it now like goldfish world jus to keep the fish less stressed.

I'd say more likely its methylene blue(or could be a trace copper solution), and it's a disease treatment(a lot of distributors use it as preventative measures, doesn't necessarily mean the fish are sick). I've seen fish shipped in blue and green water before, and I think that both of them are used as something to keep the water somewhat sterile, consume any ammonia produced, slow the fish's metabolism, or all three.

thanks mr. dunagan! so the complete stocklist for the 210 is...

9 - burundi frontosa (piscivore)
2 - boulengerochromis microlepis (piscivore)
3 - julidochromis dickfeldi midnights (micropredator)
1 - lepidiolamprologus cunningtoni (piscivore)
3 - lepidolamprologus kendalli (piscivore)
2 - neolamprologus sexfasciatus gold (micropredator)
4 - neolamprologus tetracanthus (predator)

...which one were you worried about eating other fish? just add a good amount of rock work and itll be fine!

right now the tetracanthus's cant make up their minds on which rocks they want to occupy! it almost seems like they follow the dickfeldi's around.

I've been keeping a single medium sized female trop in with my mixed africans, she's been thriving. I paid nine for mine and just added her in as an experiement, I don't know maybe I'm just lucky. I do alternate krill/greens day one day two type feeding. One meal day one, krill (she loves krill), two meals on day 2, greens. Seems to work perfectly. she's in with huge haps and she dosen't seem to even notice them, vise versa.

yup, my cunningtoni got down and killed the dominate tetracanthus! now theres order in the tank and all this time you could see that the cunningtoni was buliding up! now it looks to be one male and two female tetracanthus. just guessing by size and how the two reacted to that one. had a feeling that cunningtoni was gonna put in work sooner or later! it is what it is!

Cyps seems to have this careless freedom about them. They don't care who they go to, where they go to and who runs the area. They swim about minding everyone else's business that suddenly everyone gets distracted. Right now all of my Tangs swim out in the open amongst each other and it's great to see! Even now the Julis come out into the open. I always read on forums that Julis always like to hide so it's hard to take pics. I don't seem to have that issue. :D

As for the type, pick anyone. :) I picked the cheapest that was offered to me. :D I actually got a really great deal for adult cyps.

That looks great! Yeah, you definitely need more rocks. :D You should put shellies right in the middle near the front, they would look great. I like the look of the stealth heaters. I currently have 1 400W but I just purchased 2 250w stealth heaters and I think I will use those 2 instead.

yeah, i know i need more rocks but yall get the idea. im also gonna add more shells for a cosmetic look but ill keep my shellies in their own tank but i agree it would look sick! that was actually my first setup thought but i didnt want to take any chances with shellies in a piscivore/predator tank! you feel me!

Not to be a jerk but I see MAJOR FLAW in your plumbing design! I haven't read through the whole thread, so I don't know if this was addressed somewhere else but:

If your Fluval breaks or stops working you are going to have to drain almost the entire tank to take it out and fix or replace it. You should have put some shutoff valves in-line before the Fluval shutoff valves. You can get threaded PVC valves, put male barbed fittings in them and place them in the tygon before the Fluval. That way you can shut them down to keep water in the tank while removing the entire filter without having to leave the top of the Fluval in place.

I SEE A MAJOR FLAW IN YOUR ABILITY TO READ AND PAY ATTENTION TO DETAIL!

I enjoyed reading your thread. When I'm ready to setup one, i will use yours and maybe mix it with fmueller for the fish and closed-loop setup.

I just though of something, couldn't you turn the pvc pipe that drains into the FX5 180 degrees.

If that hose should leak, it wouldn't drain to the bottom hole. Unless of course it leaks from the bulkhead or one of the elbow joints.

Please enlighten me then. I saw the way you have the tank plumbed. It looks to me as if one of the valves on the FX5 breaks, you have to drain the tank down past the lowest bulkhead to pull the valve out. I was just pointing out that having shutoff valves inline above that would keep that from being a problem. Or you can just be a size 7 font jackass again.

no, your wrong! all i need to do is turn the fx5 valves to close and remove the fx5! i dont need to drain nothing!

lol, It can don't say it can't or it will.

I understand your lack of concern. It is pretty unlikely, and I can understand your concern, but they have a cut off already in line.
