not really, they take about as much time to maintain as our monsters
and the rewards are even greater

Thanks for the kind responses
The tank is a 90gal - the lights are 4 110watt VHOs (T12 bulbs) 2 actinic 2 super white -- the white vhos throw off a bit of a pink hue -- next tank im gonna do 2x250 MH plus the VHOs (all actinic) probably a 120 or 150h (definately need the extra width, it is hard to aquascape in an 18inch wide tank)
the care requirements for a reef tank compared to keeping monster fish is more or less the same, except i do a lot more algae scraping on my reef tank, but i also do bigger and more frequent water changes for big fish - so its sort of a trade off
the difference is probably the cost - equipment and especially livestock are much more costly -- like keeping monster fish - reefkeeping becomes addicting

if i only had a deeper wallet! i can hardly afford my tanks now much less a large reef tank, saltwater sure makes a 90 gal look really small. im sure it looks alot bigger in person but i guess i get used to seeing the large 200 gallon reef tanks at my lfs

Nice looking tank, I want to make our living room tank a reef tank. The wife wants a puffer real bad so I am geting rid of the corals so she can have her puffer. She doesn't complain about all of my fish in the basement so I guess I can let her have one tank to do what she wants with.

Its a 90 gal tank undrilled w/ external overflow (never do undrilled again)
- 100+ lbs of live rock, 1-2in sand bed
- return pump: mag 7
- protien skimmer: Emperor Aquatics (rated for 400gal tank) w/ Mag 18 pump (it is a discontinued brand, they only make commerical skimmers now)
- refugium w/ dsb and a ton of calurpa and other macro algae
- 4 110watt VHO bulbs (plus a number of moon light leds)
- old fluval 303 canister filter for carbon or phosphate remover (return into main tank for additional flow)
- 3 maxi-jet 1200 powerheads for flow
http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=2/medium/refugium.jpg (http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=2/medium/refugium.jpg)
skimmer is free standing and was too big to fit under tank
