I use only Aquaclears on all my tanks including the one for the PB. Only media in there are foam and ceramic rings.
All the PB are made in the USA. No outsourcing involved with them.

On my 320g I use 2 eheim 2250 rated for 245g each and a tidepool wet/dry system with uv sterilizer. Water is crystal clear!

Carbon does removes the coloration caused by bogwood. I find it usefull for that purpose only, with new bogwood that is. Older wood doesn't colour the water anymore.

Yeah, it removes the colour from the water. Only the colour.

getting PBass soon.
125G has Rena Filstar XP4 and a Cascade (800?) submerssable.
I use bio-Sponges, and this other stuff that keeps the ph under control (cant remember at the moment). Looks kinda like carbon, but has little white chunck in it...
I'll use carbon during my fisrt cycle on a tank or after a major water change. I've heard it kills off most of your bacteria.

Sump w/ bio balls, Ceramic, and Poly filter, 2x 120g carbon bags. Helps with the smell imo.
Also two 160ph at 4x turnover each.
Can't decide which one I like best but I own all except orino. At the top of the list are my PINIMA/Tem's.

I use a fluval fx5 containing ceramic rings on my 150g. No cichla in that tank at the moment just a tsn, rtgg and silver aro. I have 2 tems, 1 orino, and 3 occels all 4-6". I will put them in the 150g in about 6 months and add another fx5 ready for when I get a bigger tank.

And of course I have a UV sterilizer 24/7 I recommend one for any tank over 150g.
As far as favorite P Bass I am leaning towards Kelebri.
