Sad morning, found my 2.5 ft SA lungfish behind the tank this morning. Did not think he could get out of an opening that I could not get my thumb through. He was pretty dried out. He is back in its tank now, hopefully he will make it.

it looks like my south american will make it. He doesn't look good, but he his hanging in there. I know lung fish can hibernate in dried out water beds, but I do not think they are supposed to dry out themselves. They make a "cacoon" with the outer layer of slime to trap moisture to their bodies. Sorry I do not know the exact mechanism, but i think it is along those lines.

The SA lung has a 90 gallon to itself. After I put him back in the tank I covered all the openings with rocks and pipe.

Thought I would give everyone an update. Sorry it took so long just got back to school. He seems to be doing much better. He is starting to eat a little too, so he will be fine.

Those thing happen even to the pros at public aquariums. They think their tanks are jump pruff and they lose fish all the time.I know because I have talk to alot of curators and they don't like to let the public know !

That is so awesome it lived.

I can try to get some. The lungfish is at home with my parents. He actually jumped out the morning I was leaving to go back to school. My computer crashed awhile ago and I lost all of my pictures. I will see if my dad is willing to take some.

When I first got my lungfish he ended up on the floor for a few heartstopping moments. when I got him home and in his tank he started getting a fungal infection. i medicated at half dosage and he soon turned around. Quite a while later, while I was scrubbing his tank's glass he shot up, knocking off the entire canopy. he ended up falling behind the rack I had set up at the time. I remember thinking "Where is the cat!? I eventually got him back in his tank, and once again he developed a fungal infection. I medicated him and again he turned around, and he's been healthy ever since.

my 3" african lung jumped out and I found him dried and covered in cat hair and carpet fuzz- put him back in the tank, cleaned off the fuzz, and he was fine. He shed all of the parts that were completely dried out- all his little feet and the end of his tail, but it all grew back. their lungfish- they're designed to survive just about everything....

Glad to hear his ok.
I lost my silver Aro recently...
He jumped out after my brother forgot to close the top after feeding. :(

Once I had a Fossilis catfish that spent a day (more than 8 hours) on the carpet floor and survived. So I guess the lungfish would be ok.

You're lucky. I have cats and dogs in the house that make sure anything that gets out of the tank, never makes it back to the tank. They probably don't even have time to dry out.
